Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin caused by an excess of melanin. It is most common amount people with darker skin such as African, Latin, Native American and Asian but can occur with anyone.

Some of the common types of hyperpigmentation include melasma, age spots, liver spots, freckles and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It can also be related with several diseases such as Addison’s disease and other sources of adrenal insufficiency, in which the hormones induce melanin synthesis.

There are several factors that can cause the excess of melanin which will produce the skin discoloration. Pregnancy, birth control pills, acne, sun exposure, medication, hormone fluctuation, and over exposure to the sun can all cause discoloration of the skin. If you are prone to hyperpigmentation you should always use sun protection for your skin.

Hyperpigmentation is not life threating but most people what to treat it since it looks horrible on their skin. There are several options for treatment varying from at home remedies to medical procedures.

Home remedies.

Lemon juice: The acidic properties can lighten the skin. Some people add honey with the juice to increase the effeteness.

Potato: Cutting a potato into thin slices and applying it to the affected area.

Avocado juice: Peel and mash the avocado into a paste and apply it to the skin. The paste is high in vitamin E which is good for your skin.

There are many more home remedies you can find if you do some research.

Over the counter creams

There are many creams that can be purchased that can treat hyperpigmentation by lightening the skin. Most of these products contain hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent and can be effective if the discoloration is not severe. You can also use facial creams that have niacin amide or N-acetyglucosamine which are known to remove dark spots.

Chemical peels can also be effective: These peels remove blackheads, dead skin and clogged pores which help remove the dark spots.

Surgeries

Microdermabrasion: Abrasion is used to remove dead skin and allowing new skin to grow back in its place. This is done over several sessions and in time the discolored area will be removed and new skin will grow back to replace it.

Laser surgery: A laser is used to destroy the skin in then effected area. This will leave you with a uniformed skin color and is the most effective hyperpigmentation treatment.

Hyperpigmentation is common and there are several books filled with home remedies. There are also websites dedicated to treatments for hyperpigmentation that you can research. It is important to always consult a dermatologist before using any treatment to avoid any possible side effects. In some cases the discoloration will go away normally as long as you keep the effected are protected from exposure to the sun. There are several ways to treat hyperpigmentation.
