When A Child Has Psoriasis

What You Can Do To Help...

It’s not very nice to discover that your child or a child you care about has psoriasis. As a parent it is particularly upsetting because as parents we are supposed to be able to to protect our child or children from danger as, much as we possibly can. The aim is to keep them safe from illnesses or diseases so that they can live a long and happy life.

The scaly red patches that are associated with this chronic skin disorder can be seriously itchy. An adult suffering with the condition can struggle with the self-control required not to itch the flaky patches of skin but children often lack the same level of self-control and so it can be really tough to watch a child suffer in this way.

Research has shown that psoriasis is generally genetic but it is important to understand that it can also be brought on by some other causes. These other causes can include an injury to the skin of some kind, like a burn or a scratch for example and even the onset of puberty.

The most common type of this chronic autoimmune disorder is called plaque psoriasis. This is the type that is most commonly seen in children with this disease which usually affects the lower back, the knees and the elbows, however the scalp is also quite common but this can often be mistaken for a bad case of dandruff. There is another type of this disease called Guttate. This kind is also common in teenagers and younger children and often shows up while suffering from, or immediately after a throat infection. The best thing about this kind of psoriasis is that it can take up to a few months to clear up but once it has gone, it usually doesn’t show up again.

As with all sufferers of this autoimmune disease, there are ointments and medications available via a prescription following a trip to the doctor. The doctor will be able to prescribe the correct medication and dosage fit for the specific child.

A really good tip which will help children who suffer with this condition is to moisturise, moisturise and moisturise the scaly patches over and over and then some more! I cannot stress this enough, the more lotion you put on the areas the less itchy the scaly patches will become, so therefore the child is much less likely to scratch them. Also, and depending on how old the child is, it can be a very good idea to start to explain to the child sufferer about the reasons and potential risks that are associated with scratching and picking at their sores or trying to pull off the flaking skin. The more educated the child sufferer is regarding their condition, the more likely they will be able to control themselves when it comes to scratching and picking. Pack the child off to school with some lotion or moisturiser so that they can rub some on the patches when they do start to itch or are tempted to pick. It will also be beneficial to speak with the schools head teacher and their own teacher so that they can keep an eye on the child too.

There are numerous home remedies, which are often more natural remedies, that are suitable for children too. Why not try adding some oil to their bath? This can be olive oil, mineral oil or vegetable oil. Patting them dry after their bath and then rubbing moisturiser all over their body will help to lock in the moisture and they’ll be less likely to scratch.
