Avoid The Dreaded Yawn

It happens to all of us at one time or another. We might be in a meeting at work in which we are discussing how to improve workplace productivity. We might be sitting in class at school, where we are reviewing for the upcoming psychology test. We might even be playing Scrabble while enjoying quiet time with family or friends. At a moment when we least expect it, however, we yawn.

One reason we might yawn, of course, is because of a lack of sleep or poor sleep. Many of us are sleep-deprived as a result of long hours at work. We might have things in our environment that interfere with our sleep, such as a partner or roommate who snores, traffic, or a noisy factory nearby. Our lack of sleep is evident when we yawn while we are out having fun. We try our best to stifle the yawn. We cover our mouths or take a breath, but the yawn finds its way out.

Another reason why we might yawn is because we have been sitting for too long. Many of us sit for long periods of time. Many of us work or go to school, for example. At work, we work hard to meet deadlines. At school, we listen closely as our professors explain material that we will soon be tested on. Then, at the end of the day, we watch our favorite shows, such as "George Lopez", on television. The buildup of carbon dioxide caused by sedentary activity causes us to yawn.

Yawning is a normal, natural activity, and it does not necessarily mean that we are bored. Since others will interpret the yawn as boredom, however, here is some advice.

If you have an early class in the morning or a class tomorrow night, get to bed early tonight. You (and your professor) will be thankful if you do. You will be able to stay awake during your professor's lecture, which will help you later when you take a test or write a paper. If you have problems during the class, your professor may also be more willing to work with you if he sees that you can stay awake during his class. If you fall asleep, on the other hand, you may be on your own, as he may be less willing to help you.

If you attend a Saturday seminar that goes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., take a walk when you get a break. After your walk, you should feel energized. You should therefore be able to get more out of the seminar, and you will be less likely to yawn.

Learn to stay awake. You will get more out of life, and you will not offend others.
