Certain Sleep Disorders May Increase Your Risk Of Depression

According to researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, having sleep apnea can increase your risk of having depression. Women who have doctor diagnosed sleep apnea or other sleep disturbing disorders have a more than five percent higher risk of developing or having depression than women who did not have any breathing/sleep disorder while men who had the condition were nearly three times more likely to have symptoms of depression. While other types of breathing disorder during sleep raised depression risks, snoring did not.

The symptoms of sleep apnea, including snorting, gasping or pausing breaths were associated with the major signs of depression, even those that would be called mood centered like feelings of hopelessness or of failure. Anne Wheaton, an epidemiologist with the CDC said that she would have expected some of the symptoms to overlap, including trouble sleeping or sleeping too much as well as others like feeling tired or having no energy. Both depression and sleep apnea can cause these symptoms to appear, Wheaton explained. But, as the study showed, people who had sleep apnea were more likely to have the other symptoms of depression as well.

Wheaton cautions that the study only showed a link between sleep apnea and depression but did not establish cause and effect. But, according to the results, doctors are urged to pay more attention to people who have one or the other of these conditions so that they can explore the likelihood of the other being developed or already present.

The study, which will be published in the journal, Sleep, looked at the results of surveys with over 9700 adults who participated in the ongoing, National Health and Nutritional Examination. They were determined to have some level of depression based on their answers to the survey questions. According to the findings, nearly six percent of the men and half as many women had also been diagnosed with sleep apnea by their doctors.

Sleep apnea is typically diagnosed by participating in sleep studies after doctors are led to suspect that condition through physical symptoms or complains by the patient or patient's family. There are a number of causes of the condition, including obesity and certain physical attributes which can lead to the throat being closes off during sleep. While they may not know it, the sleeper actually stops breathing for as long as several seconds which can continue throughout the night, leaving them exhausted in the morning no matter how long they think they slept the night before.

Hello, I'm over weight and my doctor had trouble seeing the back of my throat so he thought I might have sleep apnea. Got tested this week still waiting to hear results.

My husband has sleep apnea. It's pretty scary when I'm in a sound sleep and suddenly hear him loudly gasping for air. I recommend that anyone get tested if there is a remote chance they have this problem. The CPAP machine does a world of wonders for those who suffer and their spouses.
