How Can I Stop Someone Else From Snoring?

This is a very common question from people affected by their snoring spouses. Regardless of how long you and your spouse have been together, a snoring partner can affect the quality of your sleep which can lead to a crisis in your day to day life. And if you thought that the snoring only affects your life, you are wrong. It will also affect the health of the snoring partner. If you really appreciate the relationship, the best thing you should do is to set priorities.

First, discuss this problem with the person and then start a treatment plan. This way, the snoring will not ruin your relationship and instead it will improve it, and you will team up and start dealing with the problem together.

Identify What Is Causing The Snoring

Even though everyone snores from time to time, snoring that happens frequently will definitely affect your life. It will cause poor sleep, irritability, increased health issues and daytime fatigue. But if the snoring of your spouse is affecting your sleep, sleeping in separate rooms shouldn’t be the ideal snoring remedy. There are many effective solutions that will help.

Try to identify what is triggering the snoring. By knowing exactly what is causing it, you will be able to find the most ideal solution to a quieter and deeper sleep. Keep a sleep diary as a way of monitoring the snoring. Observing the snoring patterns will help in pinpointing the main reason why your partner snores and the conditions that worsen it.

Factors That Causes Of Snoring And How To Deal With Them

• Being Overweight Or Out Of Shape

One major cause of snoring include being out of shape or overweight. Poor muscle tone and fatty tissue can contribute to the problem. Even if your partner isn’t overweight generally, excess weigh around the neck or throat may contribute to snoring. Losing weight and exercising may be the only thing that your spouse requires to end the loud noise while sleeping.

• Age

The other factor that contributes to snoring is age. People above the middle age have narrower throat and decreased muscle tone in their throats. And even though you cannot do anything about the aging, a change of lifestyle, adopting new bedtime routines and throat exercises will help in solving the snoring problems.

• Smoking, Alcohol And Medications

Smoking, alcohol intake, and some medications including tranquilizers such as lorazepam and diazepam will cause increased muscle relaxation which can cause more snoring. Encourage your partner to quit smoking or to avoid alcohol. They can also consult a physician for alternative medication.

• The Sleeping Posture

A person who sleeps flat on their back tends to snore more. Sleeping in such a manner may cause the relaxation of their throat flesh which can block the airways. Encouraging them to sleep on their side is the best idea.

• Sinus And Nasal Problems

A stuffy nose or blocked airways will make inhalation difficult and therefore create a vacuum in the throat. This will cause snoring. Using salty water to rinse sinuses before bedtime will help them breathe easily. Nasal decongestants and nasal strips will also help.

Generally, losing weight, exercising, quitting smoking, avoiding sleeping pills alcohol and sedatives and establishing regular sleep patterns will help in solving the snoring problems. And if the snoring problem continues, you should consult a physician. They will recommend a surgical procedure or an anti snoring device. Snoring devices resemble athlete’s mouth guards and help in opening up the airways by bringing the lower jaw and the tongue forward during sleep.
