People who are having trouble sleeping are always searching for potent insomnia cures. Insomnia is simply the inability to fall or remain asleep through the night. Insomnia is caused by a variety of mental and medical health problems. Insomnia is known to be situational as well, and lasts for a couple of days, weeks or can last for up to a month (if it is a chronic case of insomnia).

According to statistics, about 9 to 12% of Americans are known to suffer from chronic insomnia. A lot of people of who are having trouble sleeping usually experience the following:

• Sleepiness

• Fatigue

• Difficulty focussing

• And difficulty thinking

While short-term insomnia episodes can be treated with medication; however, severe or long lasting cases of insomnia may not treated using insomnia cures that are medication based. An examination by the sufferer's sleep specialist or physician most times help get to the very root of the issue. A large number of patients respond very well to what is known as "cognitive behavioral therapy". This type of therapy involves correcting the incorrect concept about sleep. In addition to this therapy, behavioral and relaxation techniques may also be utilized in order to help patients who are having trouble sleeping.

Natural Insomnia Cures

Honey

Honey is one of the natural remedies used to induce sleep. As a matter of fact, honey has been used since time immemorial as a sleep aid. According to scientific studies, the sugar present in natural honey raises the body's sugar level slightly, unlike the refined sugar that is known to cause valleys and spikes of the body's blood glucose levels. When you consume honey, the release of insulin is way more balanced than when refined sugar is consumed. This helps the chemical substance called tryptophan to be released in the brain. Tryptophan turns to serotonin when it's in the brain – serotonin is a well known relaxation agent. Lastly, serotonin is converted into melatonin through a chemical reaction that takes place when one is in a dark room. Melatonin is one of the well known insomnia cures and can also be used to treat other sleeping disorders.

Passion Flower

This herb is known for its sedative properties which can help people who are having trouble sleeping. This herb can be brewed as a tea and taken before bed time in order to combat insomnia; people who have used this herb have reported an improved sleep after using it for a couple of days.

Regular Exercises

This is perhaps one of the easiest insomnia cures that is known to help many people who are having trouble sleeping. The exercises does not have to be to intense in order to enjoy its benefits; you could take a 15minute walk each day and you will notice how easy you would find it easy to fall asleep at night.

A word of caution: do not exercise within three hours of when you wish to go to bed. Exercising later in the day will boost your metabolism and your heart rate, which makes it hard to fall asleep.
