Lack Of Sleep Can Hurt Your Health - Studies Confirm

There haa been a number of studies that show continued long-term sleep disruption, or deprivation, can impact health and weight, a phenomena which is evident in those who work in swing shift situations, changing their sleep patterns every few weeks. Just as their body is adjusting to the shift, it changes and they have to work to adapt to a new one. A new study is confirming that even a single night of disrupted sleep or not getting enough sleep can decrease the body’s metabolism and may impact how the body uses energy as well. That European study is being published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and showed a direct link in decreased sleep with an increased risk of weight gain.

In addition to decreasing metabolic rate and energy consumption in the body, sleep disruption and/or deprivation can cause problems with the way the body handles stress, as well as increasing hunger related hormones. Even a single night of less than optimal sleep may decrease the energy used for activities such as breathing and digestion by as much as 20%, according to the study. The human body burns energy when doing routine things without any conscious effort and it is these activities that increases overall calorie burn.

The study, using fourteen male students, used a number of different sleep patterns and conditions and then measured the results the following days. The students were monitored for how much they ate, their blood sugar, their hormone levels and even their metabolic rate. Conditions included disrupted sleep, decreased amounts of sleep, no sleep at all and normal sleep patterns.

The results showed that after even a single night of disrupted sleep, the students did not have as much energy to burn as normal and also had elevations in their morning blood sugar readings. In most people, morning blood sugar levels are typically low because there has been no food consumed during the night, and because the body has used energy to continue breathing and to keep the heart beating. After the interrupted sleep night, the men also had higher blood levels of ghrelin, an appetite regulating hormone as well as the stress hormone, cortisol. Ghrelin stimulates hunger and can lead to overeating while cortisol is typically responsible for weight gain, typically around the belly and waist.

Those who get five hours or less of sleep are more prone to weight gain and weight related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Experts suggest that 7 to 9 hours of sleep nightly are optimal, however, there is no universal number that is right for everybody. Experts also stress that just getting enough sleep is not going to protect people from weight gain because there are so many factors that can influence metabolism in the body, as well as the risk for obesity and other conditions. It is important to eat a healthy, varied diet, to exercise and to get the right amount of sleep for your own body’s needs.
