Why You Should Avoid Staying Up Too Late

Many of us have nighttime activities that we love and look forward to all day. We might watch favorite television shows or read bestselling novels, for example. These activities are great pastimes. You might watch a show or read a chapter before you go to bed. Stick to one episode of a show, rather than watching the marathon that runs until 7:00 the following morning. Read just one chapter, rather than trying to finish the entire book in one night. Watching a marathon or trying to read an entire book in one night will affect your performance at work the next day.

One way in which it will affect you is that you will be tired, therefore you will be working slower than usual. When you slow down, your boss may notice the decrease in your productivity and the work that is piling up on your desk. He may then decide to cut back your hours. A decrease in productivity is not the only bad thing that may happen if you decide to stay up late, however.

Another bad thing that may happen if you stay up late is that you will be irritable. Coworkers will wonder what is wrong, and they may avoid you. Good communication among coworkers helps to make a workplace successful, so it is best if everyone is in a good mood. When people do not avoid each other, a workplace runs smoothly. There is also another way in which a lack of sleep can affect you at work. It can make you forgetful.

Forgetfulness can result in anything ranging from minor embarrassments to major problems. For example, you may repeat a task that you have already completed. This would be embarrassing and would result in a few minutes of wasted time and possibly some wasted supplies. It should not cause a serious problem, however. Forgetting something else, on the other hand, such as a report that is due, could result in major problems. Your boss needs the report and is counting on you to get it done. By avoiding a late night, you will likely remember to write your report. You will then keep your boss happy, and your job will be safe. In addition to protecting your job, there are other reasons to avoid staying up too late.

If you stay up late in order to read a novel in an entire night, you might finish the book, but you will be falling asleep as you read. Then, after you have finished it, you may not remember what you have read. You will also experience the letdown of having nothing to look forward to.

Similarly, if you stay up to watch a marathon, you might fall asleep while watching your show. You will then miss some funny scenes.

Instead of staying up, go to bed. You do not have to finish your book by a certain date. Take your time and enjoy it. Consider buying a DVD of your favorite shows. Then, once you have the DVD, watch one episode each night.

Good things are worth waiting for. At the end of a long day, it is great to settle into something that you love.
