Babe Ruth's Jersey
If you want to own a baseball jersey worn by the legendary Babe Ruth, you better have a cool few million lying around. The 1920 jersey holds the record as being the highest selling piece of sports memorabilia of all time at $4.4 million.
James Naismith's "Rules of Basketball"
What was probably once just a stapled document that made a bunch of kids groan in PE class is now the second-most coveted item amongst sports collectors. The father of basketball, James Naismith, created the game when he was the Athletic Director at Kansas University in 1891. What is commonly referred to as "the birth certificate of basketball" sold at auction for a whopping $4.3 million dollars.
Mark McGwire's 70th Home Run Ball
"Big Mac" as he was nicknamed, played with the Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals. During his sixteen year career, he broke the home run record in 1998 with 70 home runs. The ball that he sent sailing for that 70th home run brought in $3 million at auction.
The Flying Dutchman Baseball Card
Honus Wagner (nicknamed "The Flying Dutchman") was a baseball player on the Pittsburg Pirates and the Louisville Colonels in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Put it this way -- when this guy retired from baseball, the Titanic had only just sunk a few years earlier. When the American Tobacco Company wanted to start putting baseball cards into packs of cigarettes, Wagner flipped out, forcing the ATC to halt the presses on his card. Only an estimated 200 actually made it into the hands of teen smokers, making Flying Dutchman baseball cards worth $2.8 million today.
The Soccer Rulebook
What is believed to be the rulebook for one of the most popular sports in the world was written in 1858. To get your hands on what is generally accepted to be the only copy left of The Rules, Regulation, & Laws of the Sheffield Football Club, you had better be ready to reach deep into your pockets and shell out $1.4 million.
These pricey sports gems make getting your hands on autographed NFL footballs seem like child's play. Old Ghost Collectibles has autographed NFL footballs, as well as a large selection of memorabilia for every sports fan. Questions? Give us a call at 972-375-2592.
