Snowboarding Tips For The Absolute Beginner

You’ve probably been told how hard snowboarding is, right? That it's much harder than skiing and it's only for the young, adventurous types. It's simply not true! Anyone can enjoy the huge fun derived from snowboarding. So with all those excellent last minute ski deals around, perhaps this is the year you'll learn?

While the first few times can be quite daunting, of course, there’s really no need to fear the slopes. Most people get the hang of snowboarding pretty quick, even if if they're an absolute beginner. If you're already able to ski, it's even easier to get your snowboarding groove on.

Here are a few quick snowboarding tips to help you go from beginner to awesome - fast.

The Right Gear

It’s good to have your own gear (particularly the boots, bindings and board) for familiarity and consistency. But unless you’re absolutely sure you’re going to be an avid snowboarder, it makes sense to rent at first, not buy. If possible, make arrangements with the resort to try to get the same, or almost the same gear for the duration of your stay. Of course, if the savings on those last minute ski deals are enough to allow you to buy your own gear, all the better!

Look Cool, But Stay Warm and Protected

Having said that, don't blow all the money you’ve saved on your last minute ski deals on an expensive jacket. You need a lightweight, waterproof jacket, plus perhaps an extra sweater in your pack in case of really low temperatures. Layer, layer, layer is the advice. By the way, don’t choose cotton – it will just soak up sweat and freeze in Alpine temperatures. Don’t forget you'll need gloves and snow pants, as you'll definitely be spending a fair bit of time on your backside or on your hands at the beginning.

Practice Your Stance and Your Moves

You will need to determine your stance before you get on the slopes. Are you a goofy foot or a regular? Sound like Greek to you? It's simple really: regular means you lead with your left foot forward, while goofy means you ride with the right in front.

Falling Right

Let’s face it – sooner or later (and probably sooner), you’re going to fall, so you may as well do it right. It’s better (and safer) to fall uphill rather than downhill, and you should also try not to land on your coccyx or tailbone. Not only is it dangerous, it will definitely hurt, a lot.

Remember the Rules.

There’s really only one rule on the slopes you need to know: someone going downhill always has the right of way. Everything else can be learned eventually.

Take Lessons and Ask Questions

One big mistake an absolute beginner can make is thinking you can figure everything out on your own. Not only will the learning curve take longer, it may even cause you to develop some bad habits that will stick. So save money by trying to find last minute ski deals beforehand, and spend the savings on lessons and coaching. You’ll be glad you did!
