3 Reasons Arsenal Fans Should Be Excited About the Remainder Of 2011 Season

After a horrendous start to the 2011/2012 season, the gunners are back to winning ways and all seems right at the Emirates stadium. Arsenal are notorious for hitting giddy heights throughout a season only for it to unravel as crunch time approaches. There are some similarities to how this season and last season are panning out. What makes this season any different from last season when they where in contention for four titles (FA cup, Carling cup, Premiere League, Champions League)?

Robin Van Persie

The Arsenal talisman has been in dazzling form and is the hottest striker in the Premiere league at the moment and with the manager determined to keep him healthy for the entire season. Games against minnows and unimportant games, Wenger has shown that he will sit the striker in an attempt to maintain his fitness even going as far as to petition the coach of the Dutch team to use the striker sparingly on international duty as long as the matches are not key games. If Van Persie can keep fit for the entire season then it is quite conceivable that Arsenal may fianlly end their title drought this year.

Thomas Vermaelen

The 'Verminator' was sidelined during the most important part of Arsenal's last season and perhaps is the main reason why the gunners did not raise a trophy last year. It seemed he would be out for another long period with an injury at the start of this season but the heart of Arsenal's defence has returned and seems to be back at his best and already the overall defence has shown marked improvement with him around. Much like Van Persie, Arsene Wenger will make sure his prized defender will be kept fit for as long as possible and therefore give Arsenal a boost for the remainder of the season.

Squad Rotation

Of late it is quite clear that the manager is quite keen to rotate the squad and make sure that key players are always fresh for the big matches. In what many found to be a shock, Wenger kept Van Persie on the bench for an hour in their champions league encounter with Marseille at the emirates stadium in a game which could have sealed qualification into the knockout rounds with a win. Earlier in the season Arsenal struggled to put together a squad to face Manchester United and were handily beaten but with the progression of the season and with additions such as Per Mertesacker and the rise in form of Laurent Koscielny, Wenger now faces selection dilemmas which is a good thing for an Arsenal side which always struggles with depth. With the addition of Ju Young Park who admittedly still needs some time to gel, this will take some pressure of Arsenals current strike force aswell and when Jack Wilshere makes his return from injury; the gunners may very well be spoiled for choice as the season progresses.

The manager has learned from the disasters of last season and is determined to avoid those pitfalls which cripled the campaigns and with the possible addition of another striker and quality midfielder in the upcoming transfer window, Arsenal could very well be holding silverware at the end of this season.

Hi Dwayne. Thank you for a nice article, and I do agree with you that Arsenal is a great team. I'm a great fan of Spanish soccer/Football and FC Barcelona. But I do enjoy Premier League as well. Nice post, keep it up :D

Although niches on street articles are men's style and grooming , interior design and a bit of Investing, I do love a good game of football/soccer. A die hard fan of Arsenal; in fact, I consider i would do a good job at the Emirates as a transfer market consultant. I would write on this later. Your article though is really good.
