A Goal Worth 35 Million Pounds

Many a fan of Liverpool Football Club, will be wondering whether the best of Andy Carroll is yet to come after the past week in the center forward's career. Certainly in the Premier League, Carroll's form has been questionable. But in the cup competitions, particularly in the fa cup semi final, the derby, Carroll stepped up to the plate. When we look at Carroll's performances this season in the famous red shirt, the main questions that have come up, have been, is he worth the 35 million pounds that Liverpool Football Club paid for him ?

To refresh your memory, we will go back in time to look at Andy Carroll's professional footballing career so far. Carroll started his career for Newcastle United back in 2006 at the age of 17, he then spent a brief period on loan at Preston North End, before establishing himself in the Newcastle first team in 2008. When Newcastle dropped down to the Championship, Carroll was one of the players that played a great part in their immediate promotion back to the Premier League, scoring 17 times in 39 games. On the return to the Premier League, Carroll was still very influential in the team, scoring his first career hat-trick against Aston Villa, and scoring the third goal for Newcastle, in their 3-1 win victory over Liverpool.

So in January 2011, on a crazy transfer deadline day, when Fernando Torres shockingly handed in a transfer request to Chelsea, Liverpool Football Club, after securing the signing of Luis Suarez, turned their attention to the big striker, who had already managed to score 11 goals in 17 games for Newcastle United before he injured himself during a night out drinking with friends. Following Torres' transfer to Chelsea, Liverpool Football Club finally managed to get Carroll for 35 million pounds, however the player's first appearance would be as a substitute during the 3-1 victory against Manchester United.

Furthermore it took the player another month before he would score his first goals for Liverpool during the 3-0 victory over Manchester City. He would not score another league goal for Liverpool until the derby against Everton at Goodison Park. In cup competitions however, particularly in the FA Cup, Carroll has been on top form, netting 3 times in 5 appearances, his league form has been awful. So why has Carroll struggled to find his feet at Liverpool Football Club ?

Well for some people it could have been due to his attitude in most of the games he has played for Liverpool. It could however also be pressure to succeed which has played a large role on many of the new signings at Liverpool Football Club, including the likes of Jordan Henderson, who like Carroll is also in his early 20s. When a person thinks about it, Carroll is only 23 now, he replaced a prolific striker, Fernando Torres, whom he was to duplicate. But this has not been the case in the sense that, Fernando Torres played for a Liverpool side who had a very good midfield from which he could feed. Carroll has not been so fortunate, in most games he has played a deeper role for the team.

But it could be seen that the big number 9 is working on his attitude, which has improved in the last couple of games, so what would the solution be to turn the big man into a goal scoring machine, in the mold of players like Liverpool legends Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler ? Simple, Liverpool need more creative players that can feed the big man, and judging from yesterday's performance, the team is moving in the right direction.

With time Liverpool Football Club supporters may yet see the best of Andy Carroll, so to Andy Carroll and Liverpool Football Club congratulations on reaching your second Cup Final in 2012, may you build on from this success and go on to greater things in the future, you showed that you could be worth the 35 million pounds spent on you. You'll Never Walk Alone
