Adidas Soccer Gear – The Story

Before writing about the different pieces of soccer gear that Adidas has on the shelves, I am going to go through a bit of the company’s story.

Now the company Adidas was founded in 1948 by the two brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler. Well truth is that the company was formed when the two brothers split up after their joint venture in the company Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik which was formed in 1924. So in 1948 they split up and Rudolf Dassler moved out to make he’s own company, which is the company we know today by the name Puma. Adolf Dassler changed the company name from Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik to Adidas and the company with the 3 parallel stripes was born. Both Adolf and Rudolf were members of the Nazi party during the world wars, and it was after World War II the brothers decided to split the company.

In the early years after the split-up the two brothers started to compete. So did their hometown Herzogenaurach which divided the two soccer teams ASV Herzogenaurach and FC Herzogenaurach with them. ASV Herzogenaurach played in Adidas and FC Herzogenaurach in Puma. Throughout the 20th century Germany won several gold medals in Adidas and Puma shoes. But the two brothers were never to be friends again. Today they are buried at the same cemetery.

Adolf died in 1978 and he’s son Horst Dassler took over the management. In 1987 Horst died which later results in a company sell to the French company Bernard Tapie. Adidas went through some hard years in “the Tapie affair” and was close to bankrupt. That was a start of Adidas AG which later signed a 400$ million deal with the NBA to become the apparel provider (Still is today).

The Adidas Soccer Gear is a huge focus for the company. Today they have apparel agreement with Major League Soccer and several deals with big clubs all over Europe including Real Madrid and AC Milan. Adidas also provides referee gear that is used international and in many leagues. Also balls were delivered by Adidas in World Cup of 2006 and 2010. Adidas will also provide the balls for World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The soccer boots AdiZero F50 is a huge success and with brilliant players like Lionel Messi it is probably going to be the number one selling soccer boot in the world.

But Adidas is much more than soccer gear. Running shoes is a great business for them as well. In 2005 Adidas produced the Adidas 1 shoe which was the first shoe with a microprocessor. This shoe was branded as the world’s first intelligent shoe. The microprocessor is able to calculate how you are running and adjust the shoe to fit your style and the environment. Also Tennis, Cricket and Golf are sports that Adidas delivers equipment for.

Today Adidas is a huge business with near to 12 billion euros in sales in 2010 giving them a bit more than half a billion in net income.

I hope this article has been able to provide you with details about the history of Adidas and how big a business this is.
