What are some good soccer drills for kids? Good soccer drills for kids can vary from something as simple as follow the leader for younger players to world cup for the older more experienced players. Soccer drills for kids should be age specific. The world cup game is too advanced for most u6 players and follow the leader is to simple for u12 players. Here's a few drills for each age group that I like to run.

U6 Players:

For the u6 players it's all about learning the touch and having fun. This age group will get bored very quick so it's important to make the drills resemble a game they may already know like Simon says or red light green light, they teach the young player how to move with the ball, how to follow instructions and how to start and stop dribbling. One of the good soccer drills for kids this age is walk the dog. Each player has a ball(the dog) they walk with it keeping it close to them as they dribble, the coach yells "run away doggy" and the players kick the ball as far as they can, then chase it down catching the dog. This drill teaches them to dribble, kick and chase down a loose ball.

U8 Players:

At this level the players should have an idea of how to dribble the ball. Good soccer drills for kids at the U8 age should include a bit more ball movement and transition into shooting the ball. The drill I like to use for this is nail the coach. Each player has a ball, the coach starts to jog away from them and they are to follow dribbling the ball until they get close enough to take a good shot at the coach. Yeah that's right they shoot at the coach, try to hit him as often as possible. This drill teaches the players to dribble and transition into a shot.

U10 Players:

By this age a player should be able to dribble the ball(hopefully with both feet). Good soccer drills for kids this age should include dribbling, shot transition, passing and receiving. For this one I like to use the three goal drill. Set up a field about 40 yards square, with a goal on three of the sides. Each player will start on the side with no goal and will dribble to the first goal on the right, take a shot and continue running toward the second goal as a coach passes a ball into him. At the second goal he shoots and continues to the third goal and again the coach passes a ball into him. He will finish by dribbling to the third goal and take a shot. One thing I have my players do after every shot is continue to the goal and touch a post, this gets them in the habit of following their shot.

U12 Players:

Good soccer drills for kids at the U12 age group should consist of, dribbling, passing and receiving, shooting and position responsiblity. At the younger age groups I've noticed that most of the players seem to follow the ball and disregard their position. Although it should be introduced at an earlier age, this is the level that most of the players start to get it. You will see more players waiting for a pass or looking for a teammate to pass to. That' why my favorite of the soccer drills for kids is world cup.

To run World cup you want to have teams of three. We usually have 4 three player teams. All 4 teams play against each other at the same time. The game is played inside of the 18. The object is to score. As a team scores, they will step outside of the 18 until the last two teams have played and one has scored. The team that did not score is out. Then we play round 2 the same way until one team is out. The final round is 2v2, first team to score is the World cup champ! I like to use a variation of the game too. Play once where any shot counts, and one where there has to be at least one pass before a shot. This good soccer drills for kids teaches spacing, passing, quick shooting, touch and teamwork, and most of the kids love it.

So as you can see good soccer drills for kids will have an age progression to it. Search for the proper drills for the age of your players. Include every player in every drill at this age, including the ones that only want to play goalie, or the ones that want to play defense. Remember good soccer drills for kids should also be fun!
