Do you know how to kick a soccer ball correctly? Over the past five years, I have not had one new player come to me that knew the proper way to kick a soccer ball. Many of them would strike the ball with their toe, or push the ball instead of striking it and not understand why they had no control. These are habits that they pick up when they begin kicking a ball around in the yard, just walking up to a ball and kicking at it. We as coaches and parents need to understand that these habits have to be corrected to know how to kick a soccer ball. Lets visit some of the basic soccer kicks and how they are preformed.

To know how to kick a soccer ball, we should try to understand that there are six different kinds of kicks that we use for different results. All of these kicks will start with the same principle, plant your non kicking foot next to the ball (not in front and not behind). Keep your head down and follow through.

The first kick is called the straight kick, facing the ball, plant your foot next to it, pull back you leg into a V shape, lock your foot and ankle, swing towards the ball and strike it with the laces of your shoe, keeping your leg in a V shape and follow through, leaving your plant foot while continuing your forward motion.

The next couple of shots will use the same kicking motion. Moving the angle of the foot is the only difference. The next kick is the inside of the foot. You want to pull your leg back, angle your foot and knee outward swing and follow through. Outside of the foot, is just like the straight kick except you angle your foot slightly inwards.

When you learn how to kick a soccer ball with this next kick you will be able to get the power behind many players search for. This kick is called the angle kick. As all the other kicks you want to plant your foot next to the ball, pull your leg back at a slight angle behind you in the V shape, swing in the angle motion striking the ball with the big knuckle of your foot (that s the spot just above your big toe, also know as the sweet spot).

The final two kicks you need to know how to kick a soccer ball correctly is the chip shot and the Volley. The chip shot is the same motion as the straight shot but instead of striking the ball with a strong follow through, you just punch. You want to make contact as low on the ball as possible to get it to lift off the ground, much like a chip shot in golf. The last kick is the volley. This kick is for any ball that is not on the ground. With this kick you want a slight hesitation when you strike it and very little follow through.

Knowing the six different kicks is a good start to learning and teaching the proper way to kick a soccer ball. The soccer hop is another step you need to know. I work on this before I teach any of the kicks. Place a ball on the ground, just walk up to it and hop your plant foot next to the ball. For that drill, Don't kick it. Just work on hopping. By doing this hop and making it part of your kick, you put yourself in the proper position to strike the ball. So do you know how to kick a soccer ball? Keep it Fun!
