When learning how to play defender in soccer the main objective is to stop the attacking players from scoring a goal. For this reason a defender will do anything necessary to make sure that this happens, within the confines of the law of course. A defender's job is to stay with or “mark” an opponent until and unless otherwise instructed by the coach. Staying aggressively “on top” of the player being defended without going beyond allowed limitations causes the player being marked to have to focus on the defensive player and distracts him from what he is supposed to be doing. At the same time when mastering how to play defender in soccer it is crucial to be able to communicate with your defensive partners and your goalkeeper to make sure that your actions are in harmony

A defending player must be quick, agile and ready to use the entire body as defense to blocking the ball just as a goalie would, except his hands of course. A defender must also be good in the air so that he can outmuscle attackers when the ball is being played in the air. A defender must also be willing to put his body on the line because sometimes an attacker may have space to take a shot on goal and for a defender to ensure that his goal is secure he may have to put his body on the line and block the shot so that it goes high and wide. You cannot be afraid of getting hit by the ball ii you are going to be a successful defender so being unafraid is key to learning how to play defender in soccer.

When a defender manages to get a hold of the ball very close to his goal, his aim should be to clear the ball as far as he can. If he manages to get the ball in a less dangerous position such as between the midfield and the defence then he may play the ball on the ground to one of his teammates.

A defender must try not to lunge in to tackles especially when the attacking player is in the box or when the defender is already on a yellow card. Better to try hold up the attacking player and wait for reinforcements. This is because it is very easy to mistime a challenge and when you mistime it in the penalty area it could lead to a penalty being awarded against your team. If you are already on a yellow card you could quite easily get a red card and end up playing with 10 men.

If you want to learn how to play defender in soccer you should also try study what some of the pros do. Some of the best defenders today include Nemanja Vidic, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Carles Puyol. Study what they do and you will be well on your way to learning how to play defender in soccer.
