Learning how to play goalkeeper in soccer means opting to take on a position that is very demanding both mentally and physically. The position of goalie is the team's last defense against the opposing team and ultimately he could be the difference between winning and losing the game. This position is for those least afraid of the ball or getting hurt and for those willing to take a tumble. The goalie must be quick on his feet and be quick to make decisions. Being skilled in the air as well as having good positioning and ball handling skills is also crucial to mastering the goalie position.

The best way to become educated on how to play goalkeeper in soccer is to try all of the positions first. Gaining an understanding of the field, handling the ball, the positions and the manner in which the game plays out makes for a better prepared goalie.

A goalie must learn how to catch, parry or punch the ball and when each is appropriate. There are correct and safe details for each technique and it is an important part of learning how to play goalie in soccer.

A goalie must organize the position of other team members. Constantly monitoring the field, trying to predict the game plays and communicating with the team members so they can begin to defend long before the ball nears the goal. Following the ball visually at all times is essential to being a keen goalie.

This position also requires the player to learn how to fall and take a dive as diving to intercept a ball is difficult but essential in order to learn how to play goalkeeper in soccer. Some exercises you could try in order to improve your goal keeping skills could include having someone take some shots at you and you can dive down to save them. They could also throw the ball at you from various angles and you have to make quick fire saves. This will get you in the habit of getting of your feet and diving for the ball.

When practicing how to play goalie in soccer using a wall to kick against is a useful technique. Getting down the basics of intercepting and blocking the bounce back of the ball prepares one for the field. Above all else, it is important to learn to recover mentally from letting in a goal or two. The worst thing that can happen to a goalie is when he or she is short of confidence. This can lead to the keeper coming for things that he should not come for, in a bid to try improve his standing with the team. Do not fall into this trap. Master yourself mentally and emotionally and you will be well on your way to learning how to play goalkeeper in soccer.
