How to Play Soccer - Skills Needed to Improve Your Game

You probably have seen a classic between Real Madrid and Barcelona or between Chelsea and Manchester United. Those matches are the best expression of the beautiful game of soccer. After watching the skills of the players who take part in these matches, you may want to learn how to play soccer in order to become a pro someday or just to enjoy the matches in which you participate.

First of all, there are several things that everyone should know about this sport. The most important thing is that it takes a lot of commitment to be better and you have to be willing to make sacrifices and spend a lot of hours practicing. In the next sections, we will outline the basic skills needed to become a great soccer player and you will understand why not everyone has what it takes to be professional.

1. Physical ability to run for 90 minutes.

Physical training is probably the most frustrating and unwanted among players, who want to practice with the ball all the time. However, it is probably the most important skill of all, especially because nowadays players cover distances between 8 and 12 kilometers in one game.

This kind of training must be well planned to obtain optimal results. The planning has to be done according to the players’ age and level of preparation, as well as the stage of the season the team is.

The abilities to be developed are resistance, strength and speed; as well as combinations of them. A team must be well prepared in every physical aspect as a foundation to the other skills. There are plenty of exercises that can be done to stimulate the body and obtain the necessary adaptation.

2. Technical precision to put the ball where you want.

This ability can make the difference between a successful player or team and another one that doesn’t get the desired results. Every training session must involve the practice of a technical skill and players must be corrected every time they are not performing in a correct way.

The concepts involved in this category are passing, receiving, shooting and dribbling with all the body parts allowed in soccer (feet, knees, thighs, chest and head). Players must be able to use both legs in the same way, although they will always use one more than the other.

The technical training does not have to be boring or slow. There are plenty of interesting drills where the coach can combine several abilities, challenging the players to keep focused while they perform correct movements.

3. Tactical instinct to make a fast decision and create an opening in the opponent’s defense.

This concept is very complex and, if your question was how to play soccer, the answer depends mainly of the tactic skills of the players and the team.

It must be clarified that tactics and formation are not the same. The formation is just the way players are arranged across the field at the beginning of a game, while the tactics are the movements and plays the team tries to elaborate in order to score a goal.

This skill is the most difficult to obtain because it takes a lot of decision making in fractions of a second, and requires players to be well prepared individually and to practice constantly as a team.

4. Psychological preparation to act when the time comes.

This skill is still seen as a complement by many coaches when it is as important as the other three. Players must be prepared to act when they feel afraid, nervous or depressed and they have to be able to manage victory and defeat in a proper way. Every training session should include a psychological concept too.

Conclusion

As you can see to answer the question: “How to play soccer?”, we need to analyze the four skills mentioned above. Understanding the complexity and beauty of this sport will lead you to see it in a whole different way and to enjoy it even more.

There are many ways in which you can improve your playing skills. You have to train hard, be disciplined and practice a lot. But most of all, you have to love soccer over any other thing.
