International Soccer League

The International Soccer League started in 1960 when businessman William Cox decided that professional soccer was not reaching its full potential. As the former owner of a major league, American baseball team, Cox did have the knowledge that it would take to start a new league but the international soccer league was not without its controversy from the very beginning.

As a league based in the United States, the International soccer league typically saw play between American teams who faced off against guest teams from countries in Europe, Asia, South America as well as both Canada and Mexico. The league played a system that involved a half season played with one set of teams and then the second half played with a second set of teams. The teams all played for a championship cup at the end of each season.

From the start of the international soccer league, there were serious problems. The United States Soccer Football Association (USSFBA) did not want to allow Cox’s league to begin in the first place and decried it as an outlaw league. Because of the governing body of soccer, this meant many of the top players in the world could not join the international soccer league at all. The league continued despite all of the controversy until 1965 when it collapsed however, the league’s concept was used several more times throughout the next few years.

Researching the history of soccer will allow many people to read about the international soccer league and how it affected play at the time. It can also show how the leagues and championships were shaped as the league took shape, ultimately failing after five years. It is an important chapter in the formation of soccer as a whole, especially in these countries.

After the collapse of the international soccer league in the United States, other leagues with the same name were started as well. Currently, the International Soccer league is sponsored by Red Bull Energy Drinks and plays in a number of countries. There are a number of levels in the international soccer league, including the premier league in England and the leagues that play in Ireland and Australia as well.

In the present day, most of the leagues, including the international soccer league, are sponsored by large companies, including Coca Cola and others. The current version of the international soccer league is sponsored by Red Bull for instance. The sponsorship only changes the name of the league and the name of the championships in most cases, but does not change the way that the game itself is played.

While there are many leagues and many levels of competition that may play under the title of international soccer league there are only subtle differences in how the game is played from country to country. Underneath all of the titles and the Cups and the trophies, the game is still soccer after all, enjoyed by many people around the world both as participants and as avid fans.
