Kicking The Soccer Ball

Kicking the soccer ball is not the same as kicking a kickball. That is the first thing I go over with my new players every year, and I have to do this because they all do it! Every year my new players have to be broken of the bad habits they pick up on the playground. Using a toe is how most kids learn to kick a ball. That's not the way you want to kick a soccer ball. A good player will control the kick using the laces area on his shoe or the big knuckle area of the big toe with an angle kick. If you want accuracy and power on your kick you have to use the right mechanics. I'm going to go over the 5 steps in a good soccer kick.

The first step in kicking the soccer ball correctly is called the load. The load is the swing back motion of your leg. What you do is approach the ball, eyes focused on where you want to strike the ball. You should plant your non-kicking foot directly next to (not in front or behind) the ball. Placing your plant foot too far behind the ball will cause it to rise into the air, too far in front will cause it to hug the ground. Load (pull your leg back) in a V shape and twist at the hip.

Now that your leg is loaded, the next step is the downward motion or downswing. With your eyes focused on the exact spot on the ball that you want to strike, start your leg forward, head down and move the kicking leg forward, as you make contact, your eyes and head should stay down focused on the spot that you struck the ball.

The third step in kicking the soccer ball correctly is the impact. This is where the power comes from. With the plant foot next to the ball and your kicking leg coming through and striking the ball, keep your head down drive through the ball shifting your weight into the striking point. Remember to keep moving forward and eyes on where you struck the ball.

Kicking the soccer ball is complete with the follow through (kind of), with the plant foot next to the ball, your head still down and your loaded leg striking the ball, shift your weight to the kicking leg, strike the ball with your leg following through till the ball is gone. You should end up taking a forward step in the follow through motion. Now the ball is on its way, and we have one last step. Kicking the soccer ball should always end with one last move forward, find a target in front of you and run to it. That target could be an open area on the field, a goal post or maybe even a defender. The object is to always be moving toward the goal in case there is a rebound.

So there you have the five steps in kicking the soccer ball to get the power and accuracy that we all look for. Just remember, Plant, load, downswing, impact and follow through then follow the follow through.! Using these five steps correctly will increase your power and accuracy, miss one of these steps and you wont get the results you are hoping for. Any problems from here, go back to step one and focus!
