More Soccer Coaching Drills

More Soccer coaching drills that you use can be broken down into several categories. Passing, dribbling, shooting, offense and defense just name a few. I like to use two or three drills in every practice. One practice I will run offensive drills, and another I will run defensive skills. I will also try to run a simple receive or control drill to balance things out. Here's a sample of one of my practice's.

One of the More soccer coaching drills that I will run is called corner to center pass and shoot. Two players will start on the offensive side of midfield. One toward the outside of the field and one right in the middle with the ball with a ball. The player with the ball will kick it into the corner, and the player on the outside will chase it to the corner. While the outside player goes t the corner, the player that passed the ball will charge straight towards the goal and get into position to receive a pass from the outside. While these two offensive players are moving toward their goal, there are two defenders moving into position to try to stop them and take a way the passing and shooting zones. This drill teaches, passing to an open area (the corner) passing across the middle, as well as receiving the ball under pressure and defense.

The next of the More soccer coaching drills we use is the head-trap game. This one starts with the coach in the middle of a circle with five players surrounding him about 7 or 8 feet back. The coach will toss the ball to a player, while the ball is in the air he will yell "head or trap". If the coach yells "head" the player must head the ball back to the coach. If he yells "trap" the player must position himself to be able to trap the ball and then pass it back to the coach. With this set of More soccer coaching drills we will penalize a player for not performing the drill properly with push ups. This drill teaches ball control and can use different ball handling skills, like chesting the ball or using the knee or maybe a combination of 2 or 3.

The last of the More soccer coaching drills I'll share with you is called knock out. Make a large circle, big enough for all your players to move around in with a ball. Every player must be inside the circle and each must have a ball. Then instruct them to go, each player will begin to dribble around inside the circle. While they are dribbling they are going to try and knock the ball of a teammate out of the circle without losing control of their own ball. Once their ball has been knocked out that player must sit out and watch until only one player is left inside the circle with a ball. This teaches the players to control the ball while under pressure.

The More soccer coaching drills I use are changed up almost every practice to keep them fresh. Through out a season we may use twenty or thirty different drills that will focus on different skills. You should try to put together a list of soccer coaching drills that cover each aspect of the game. Use these drills to teach a skill and to reinforce others. Remember to Keep it Fun!
