New Spurs Manager, Andre Villas - Boas

Andre Villas-Boas has been appointed as the new Tottenham Hotspur manager following the departure of Harry Redknapp but what will the Spurs fans expect from the 34 year old Portuguese man following his sacking from Chelsea earlier in the year?

Background

AVB was born on 17th October 1977 in Porto, Portugal. From an early age he spoke fluent English, at age 16 he had a chance run in with Sir Bobby Robson after noticing he lived in the same apartment block as him. Robson was manager of Porto at the time and AVB wrote him a letter raising concerns about the club, when Robson responded AVB argued back which impressed Robson so much he offered the youngster a trainee position with the youth team's coaching staff. He then went on to gain his coaching qualifications.

Managerial Career

After a short spell as coach of the British Virgin Islands national team, he moved to Porto as assistant coach and then to Chelsea and Internazionale all under Jose Mourinho. AVB left Mourinho's team in 2009-10 season to manage Portuguese side Academia who were struggling. AVB had an instant impact on the side and led them to safety by 10 points and took them to a league cup semi-final.

AVB then went back to become the new manager of Porto winning four trophies in his first full season making him the youngest manager ever to win a European competition at age 33. AVB resigned from Porto in June 2011 and immediately joined English club Chelsea on a three year contract. To free him of his contract at Porto, Chelsea indirectly paid them 13.3 million pounds compensation. Chelsea lost there first match of the season and this was AVB's first defeat in 39 league matches, a run that stretched back as far as his spells with Academia and Porto. As the season went on the pressure mounted for AVB and in February 2012, Chelsea dropped out of the top four clubs in the premier league. On 4th March 2012, Chelsea was defeated 1-0 by West Bromwich Albion and AVB was sacked as manager.

On 3rd July 2012, Tottenham Hotspur announced that AVB had been named there new manager on a three year deal after successful talks with the club. Spurs club chairman Daniel Levy said that he was delighted that AVB had agreed to become there new coach due to his technical knowledge of the game.

What Next?

With the football season still yet to get underway there is no saying how AVB will get on at Spurs. Even though he had an ill-fated nine months at Chelsea (who some say he was sacked to quickly) there is no denying his skills as a manager with his stunning debut seasons with Academia and Porto. This is quite unusual for a manager to achieve so much without actually having any experience as a professional footballer. AVB is determined to prove that Chelsea were wrong to dump him and he has assured Spurs that all he needs is four or five new players to challenge for the title.
