Plan Soccer Practice

You're the new coach and now you need to plan soccer practice. Where do you start? For the first time coach, coming up with a plan on what to coach can be a challenge. If you have never played or coached before you may not know how to organize a practice. Lets start there. Depending on the age group you have, practice maybe as short as an hour or for the older players one and a half to two hours. Lets focus on one and a half hours for now.

The first thing you want to do is to when you plan soccer practice (and do this a few days ahead of time). Plan out your time blocks first. Ten to fifteen minutes of warm up to get the muscles warm up. Some light exercises like jumping jacks, push ups and sit ups. Maybe a nice easy jog around the field. Then some stretching to really get those muscles ready for the activity. Here you may want to do one of two things, sometimes I send my players on another run around the field (a little faster pace on this one), or move right into ball handling drills. Which ever you choose then next step is drills.

To plan soccer practice you should have a list of drills that you want your players to learn and have them laid out on the field before they get there. Depending on the age group, you can run some simple drills like weaving in and out of cones or just dribbling up and down the filed with different touches on the ball. Right foot then left foot, stop and pull back, roll over or cut right or cut left. For younger players you can use games they are familiar with like follow the leader or red light green light. This drill should last at least fifteen minutes, the more touches on the ball during this time the better. One thing to keep in mind during this time frame is to keep the players moving as much as possible. If you use lines, make them short and keep them moving quickly.

When you plan soccer practice, make sure you plan short water breaks. So now we have already used up about thirty minutes of our ninety minutes of practice. After the ball handling drills you can then go a couple different directions. If you have an assistant, you can split the team up and do some team drills. I have a great assistant and we split the team up into offense and defense. We will run these drills for ten to fifteen minutes and then switch the players and coaches. If you don't have an assistant, run offense and defense at the same time by splitting the team into two groups. Again, during these drills keep the players moving.

You want to plan soccer practice to cover as many drills and as much movement as possible. It's important to plan soccer practice with a flow so you can cover everything you need to go over. With out a plan and time frames it's easy to lose track of time and before you know it you spend forty-five minutes on drills and warm ups. Plan soccer practice to include about twenty minutes of how you want to set up your team. What formations you want to run and what players would play best at a certain position.

As the season goes on you to plan soccer practice to move more towards team play, find whats working for you and build on that. As the season progresses you may want to cut back on one of the drill frames and focus more on the team play. So we plan soccer practice to include warm ups, ball drills, team drills, team formations and plays. I also plan soccer practice with a scrimmage to allow the kids to play and have fun. During the scrimmage I will referee and stop play only on a foul or if I need to make a coaching point. I have seen many coaches that are not sure how to set up a practice just run a scrimmage the whole practice. Don't do that! Plan soccer practice!
