Scottish football or soccer in some parts of the world might not have the commercialism of the English Premier League, but it does have the best footballing rivalry known to man.Celtic-Rangers.
Over a hundred years of this fixture has had everything, from the good, the bad and the heart breaking.Every emotion known to man has been used and abused with this fixture.Nothing prepares you for the noise of the fans when you go to your first Old Firm Game and your ears will ring for a while after the final whistle.
Heart breaking parts of this game unfortunatley are all too common nowadays-not the game itself, but the aftermath.Deaths of fans because they wear the wrong colours,go down the wrong street at the wrong time, all because of a football game.No need. The Ibrox disatser has just had it's 40th anniversary, when men, women and children left their house to go for an afternoon's entertainment, never to return to those who waited on them.
Sectarianism's ugly head was all too apparent in these games and truth be told this could add so much atmosphere to such an already heated affair-catholic or protestant, didn't matter, you had your songs and you sang them as loud as you could. This has calmed down now and so has the atmosphere some would say,but it is still electric and this is why there is nothing like it.
For 90 minutes you can hate your best friend if they support the other side, after the final whistle it comes down to the bragging rights. You know the game will be hard fought, there will be passion from the fans, players and management teams and this all builds to the final whistle to see who wins,If your team wins, you are happy for the next week at least, you look forward to work and any other time to slag the opposing fans.If you lose-oh dear. You might not get the papers for a couple days, you might avoid the local pub for a bit and you dread going to work because you know you are going to get some playful verbal from the other side.
I know it has bad sides,as does everything-but i would notchange it fora second
I'm a Celtic fan who has been on both sides of the verbal banter.Been to a lot of these games and seen the good and the bad.Sang and been sung at.Lost my voice on several occaisions because of shouting and singing and truely beleives this is the best derby in the world, nothing else comes close.
