Learn All Of The Soccer Positions

If you are an aspiring soccer player, you probably are familiar with the game. You probably have a good idea of the position that you would like to play, perhaps even have a player that you admire that plays in that spot as well. You might even wear that player’s jumper number to pay homage to them. But, if you are new to the game or your child is about to start playing soccer, you will need to learn all of the soccer positions.

Soccer is played with two teams of eleven players each. Don’t be too overly concerned with those numbers right now, it won’t take you long to learn all of the soccer positions, there are only four categories of them. Surely, you can learn four categories of the soccer positions, right? Of these, you want to decide which will give you what you are looking for: as a player yourself you might be looking for the glory of making the plays or booting in the winning point at the end of a game. As a parent however, your needs might be a little different for your child, trying instead to find what you deem to be the safer position.

As you start to learn all of the soccer positions, you will also start to learn about the way the game is played and some of the rules. For instance you will learn that only the goaltender can use his hands while everyone else has to stick to fancy footwork to get the ball down the field. You will also learn that unlike the games of baseball and American football where each player has a definitive role, soccer players fulfill dual roles no matter where they are lining up on the field. For instance, a forward is considered to be an offensive position but they will still play a defensive role when the other team has the ball, especially when they are approaching the offensive zone.

Some people choose to learn all of the soccer positions by giving them all a try at one time or another. This way they can find the one that suits them best. In some youth leagues, the coaches will have the kids rotate through the positions playing at midfield for one week and then goalkeeper the following week.

The kids each learn all of the soccer positions plus they get the chance to find out a little bit about their own talents. They might be surprised to learn how well they use their feet to move down-field, and find that they are really good at cutting off the other team’s offensive efforts. Or, they might find out that they are great at stopping the ball from crossing the line.

If you have no intention of getting out on the soccer field, an easy way to learn all the soccer positions is to watch the game, listening carefully to the announcer and following a single player until you get a feel for the ebb and flow of the game.
