What does it take to possess strong soccer skills? Developing strong soccer skills, should begin as a child. Training in the back yard. Dribbling and passing the ball around. Every touch you get on the ball as a youngster builds the skill level. Moms and Dad, brothers and sisters all contribute to a good soccer player. Doing the drills at practice is where most players get their skills and that is just not enough to hone your skill. You must practice every drill often. Think about a musician learning to play the flute, it takes hundreds of hours of practice. The same is true for soccer.

Strong soccer skills take time, learn a skill and practice it. I will say that over and over, PRACTICE! I see every day at practice kids trying to juggle the ball. Only to find out that is the only time or the only thing they work on. You need to work on all the skills to be good at them. You have to practice with both feet. dribbling, passing, receiving, heading and the list goes on. Work on them at home! Coaches don't have the time to spend the one on one time needed to perfect the skills.

Lets think about a normal soccer practice and the time that is spent on each drill. Depending on the age group, your practice could be anywhere from one to two-hour long, and one, two or three days a week during the season. Lets go with the three days and two hours a day. The first fifteen to twenty minutes will have to be for warm ups. The next thirty minutes might be for drills, that's one and a half hours a week to work on your skill level. The next thirty minutes will be working on formations and positions and game situations. Throw in a water break or two and that leaves maybe twenty or thirty minutes to get a light scrimmage in.

Strong soccer skills need to be worked on more than ninety minute a week. Start young and practice often, that's how you gain the strong soccer skills you want. Every skill that you learn, you will need to develop muscle memory. The better the muscle memory the better and faster you will be able to complete that drill. The only way to develop the muscle memory is to practice. By now you should be able to tell what the key to strong soccer skills is. PRACTICE!
