The New Soccer Coach

For the new soccer coach getting started can be a little scary. Many coaches started right where you're at now. They were asked to coach their childs team. Don't let the fact that you have never coached before stop you. You may be a little nervous at first and that is natural. Take the position, with a little research you can be an effective coach. Here is a few ideas to help you get started.

Have Fun! That is meant for the players as well as the new soccer coach. Soccer is a game, it's meant to be fun. Find drills that you can run during practice that will keep the kids interested. Keeping the younger players interested is one thing you should really pay attention to. Boredom can ruin a practice. Keep them moving and change things up before they get bored and you will have a successful practice.

For the new soccer coach, parent involvement is very important. Talk to the parents, ask them to help out in various ways. They can organize snacks for after the games, team pictures and things like that. Also talk to the parents about some of the guidelines for your practices. Make a written policy to give the parents about tardiness, acting out, ect. Let them know what you want to accomplish and what you think it may take.

A new soccer coach may not know the best things to practice, that's okay! Ask other coaches in your league, search online and come up with a few fun drills to get you started. From there you will see what skill level you're at and what you need to work on. Then you can tailor your practices to meet those needs. Focus on teamwork and positive reinforcement to build confidence in your players. Be fair and impartial with all your players. On the field, your child is one of the players. Treat them that way, no favorites! Work extra with the players that need it the most while still challenging the others.

Take that coaching job! As a new soccer coach you don't have to be perfect! Just be effective. You can do that with a bit of research and common sense. Learn as you go along as well. Learn from your experiences, both good and bad and continue to search for more ideas and take courses to be the best coach you can be. Keep it Fun!
