Fernando Torres is arguably one of the world’s deadliest strikers. His presence to the game is having been so remarkable in the modern game that most defenders fear the name. But the question is do they fear that name now?
Torres started his career at Athletico Madrid in Spain. He went through the youth academy and played for them at the top level. He made his first debut for the club in 2001 and made 174 caps in the La Liga scoring a whopping 75 goals. After his great success in Spain in 2007 he joined Premier League giants Liverpool F.C at Anfield. Torres had an excellent start to his career at Liverpool as he was the fastest player in Liverpool history to hit 50 leagues in a season. Beating great scoring legends like Robbie Fowler, Torres had proven too many that he was a hot prospect for the future.
In January 2011 Fernando Torres left Liverpool and moved to West London giants Chelsea F.C on one of the premier league biggest transfer fee a sum of 50 Million pounds was paid for this Spanish striker. In the season of 2010/2011 Torres didn’t like things at Anfield. His goal rate had decreased. It seems to him that he wasn’t gaining the right service which all led to his move. Torres was thought to have a major impact when moving to Chelsea but that didn’t go according to plan. Another goal drought, with him playing 903 minutes on the pitch Torres eventually scored his first goal against West Ham on the 23 of April. After scoring this goal Torres lack the consistency to score week in week out which creating immense pressure on the manger as he had a bench full of attacking players. Players such as Didier Drogba, Nicholas Anelka, Maludua and many more it was hard for the manger to take off his 50 million man striker.
Things have changed this season with new management at Chelsea F.C. Andres Villas Boas; a previous intern for Jose Murinho had seen that he had younger talent approaching such as Daniel Sturridge. Proven that this season Fernando was given a chance to prove himself but didn’t show a greater impact other players were willing to show. Due to this he has found himself in the position of being a substitute. This as is a similar story to Adel Taarbat and it is saying that as a footballer you can only be at the top level for a certain time. Torres will need to prove to Andres Villas Boas. That he has a greater impact and is the best striker at Chelsea. But it will say in the future.
