Last night, after their controversial defeat to Manchester United, Chelsea launched an official complaint against referee Mark Clattenburg, accusing him of using "Inappropriate Language," against two Chelsea players at two separate intervals, one of them is claimed to have been of a racist nature.
The statement goes no further than this. I'm sure we will learn more in the future, but the question on everybody's minds right now is, "What did he say?"
Did he even say anything, or is this just Chelsea being sore losers? It is clear that Clattenburg and his assistants made a couple of glaring errors over the course of the game, the most notable being the sending off of Torres for a dive that wasn't a dive, so people will be right to say that Chelsea are just trying to get revenge and cry foul for the unfortunate way in which they were defeated.
However, this is no player outburst, but a formal complaint made by the club. When it comes to matters such as this, club officials are able to take emotions out of it and consider the ramifications before taking action. If Chelsea have made this complaint, then chances are Clattenburg did indeed say something inappropriate, and the fact it is on two separate occasions makes Chelsea's claim stronger. On one occasion he was deemed to have used racist language. I think Chelsea are the last team in the world right now to want to get involved in racism claims unless there is real substance to it.
While the official statement from Chelsea did not go into further details, it is known that Jon Obi Mikel visited the referees dressing room after the match, and was booked for dissent after Man Utd scored their 3rd goal (which was offside). By this point Clattenburg was already getting a lot of stick from players and fans, so it is possible that the pressure resulted in an outburst; referees have been known to lose it in the past, although these kinds of things are more usually associated with players.
I was watching the game online, as I was out of the country, and I did not see what Clattenburg may have said, but from his body language I could tell that he was angry. I can only speculate as to whether he really did use racist words.
One thing is for sure, he will be refereeing in the lower leagues next week once the decision makers have reviewed the game footage and seen how terrible his decisions were. These accusations add further fuel to the fire that he made a royal cock-up of his job during this game. The Ivanovic red card was fair enough, the right decision. From then on it just looked like a farce, I am glad I was only watching online and not paying to go to the match!
Ever since I started working from home I have always read the sports news first thing on a Monday, and it seems now that almost every week there is a new controversy about comments, be they racist or not. It is starting to get old, yet I am always curious to read more.
Time will tell what Clattenburg said to the players. Remember, there were three other officials at that game who also had microphones and earpieces. Will they out the truth, or will they help him to cover it up? That in itself is an interesting question.
I did not see the match but if true, its a sad day for football!
I watched the game myself and could see Torres did not deserve to be sent off, however he has been known to repeatedly dive during matches in the past and when things are going at full speed it would be difficult for the ref to decide otherwise. He cried wolf once to many times I think. The third goal was indeed offside and should not have counted but it was only last season when the decision went the other way and an offside goal was given against Man United. Swings and roundabouts! The allegations against the ref have yet to be resolved and only time will tell what was said. I think the game over the past few years has got more headlines for controversy between players behavior than the football on the pitch. The beautiful game has lost its glory. Nice article!
"it was only last season when the decision went the other way and an offside goal was given against Man United" - In what game was this exactly? The Man U v Chelsea game at Old Trafford last year there were 2 Man U offside goals that were wrongly allowed, there was nothing the other way. The Chelsea v Man U game at Stamford Bridge last year Man U scored from 2 debatable penalties.
Sorry that was March of 2010. Drogba who was a mile offside. Chelsea won the title that season if i remember correctly! As I said swings and roundabouts!
"Sorry that was March of 2010. Drogba who was a mile offside." You remember correctly, but not accurately!! In that game Chelsea won 2-1, with Man U's goal being an obvious handball. So the swing balanced the roundabout in that game, and is therefore not available for carry forward!!!
But what about Ashley Young then? He has, along Luis Suarez maybe, the biggest reputation in the UK for diving. Ivanovic was sent off for tripping him, where actually even cameras couldn't FULLY lead to a certain conclusion if there was contact or if Young just capitalized on Ivanovic's movement. The Torres situation was actually a very similar one, only that there was clear contact, which the linesman, being on exactly that side of the pitch, should see as well.
