For those of you who aren't yet aware, Chelsea launched a formal complaint against referee Mark Clattenburg after Sunday's controversial game with Manchester United. No, it wasn't for the way in which he managed to "ruin the game", but for two comments he is alleged to have made towards two Chelsea players on two separate occasions, one of them thought to be of a racist nature.
When I first read those headlines, I almost spit out my morning tea. Chelsea of all clubs making this claim! That actually made me think that the allegations might hold some truth, after the year they have had, do Chelsea really want to go down this path unnecessarily?
One of the players is believed to have been Jon Obi Mikel. This is because he was seen visiting the referees' dressing room after the match. People naturally then put two and two together, and assumed the racist remark to have been directed at Mikel, but according to latest news, it was Juan Mata who received the racial comment.
The words being bandied around the Internet are along the lines of "Spanish Tart" which many people believed were thrown at Torres for his perceived diving, yet comments by Peter Herbert, the lawyer behind the potential black players' breakaway union named Mata and Mikel as the recipients of the inappropriate language.
Clattenburg has often been in the limelight, either for handing out red cards (his latest batch has been 4 cards in 2 games) or for promoting hair restoring products, but this recent spotlight will be more than he asked for, it is enough for him to potentially lose his job. It has already been confirmed that he will not be officiating any games next weekend, in order to keep the footballing world focused on football instead of the refereeing teams. This is great news for anybody trying to give up smoking, you might actually be able to survive a stress-free weekend without Clattenburg sending half your team's players off.
In terms of what Mikel might have had said to him, we can only guess so far, and hope that the referees assistants, who would have been able to hear through their earphones everything that Clattenburg said, will be honest about what they heard. Whatever the outcome of this is, we all hope justice is served. Mikel was booked for dissent shortly after Man Utd's third goal, so it is possible that he provoked Mr Clattenburg into saying something regrettable, but watching it live myself, I didn't see Mikel's reaction as looking particularly hard-done by.
Mata too, one of the rising stars of the premier league and one of the hottest selling products for merchandisers at the moment, seemed to stay out of things and I can't remember seeing him exchanging words at all with the man in black, so I am very curious indeed to see what will happen next.
I wonder how many Spanish Tarts with Mata or Torres scrawled across the top will be sold online this week.
It's always a shame when race plays a part in these types of situations. The referee in question seems to be very hard boiled and has a reputation of throwing players out of games for minor infractions. He seems to have a lot of enemies and even more now that this mess has surfaced.
