Why Was Di Matteo Sacked?

It is becoming a familiar sight at Chelsea. Hold that, it is already a familiar sight at Chelsea, and it should be no surprise that it has happened again, but I really am surprised. What do you have to do to keep the job at Stamford Bridge these days?

You win the League and Fa cup, then the next year you get fired for winning nothing. Your successor gets sacked 8 months later for a string of bad results, HIS successor then goes on to win the Champions League and FA Cup himself, before being sacked 8 months later. Just what do you have to do? From Ancelotti to Di Matteo, we are seeing managers get sacked less than a season after winning doubles, and let's not forgot Mourinho.

Di Matteo was sacked last night after a 3-0 defeat to Juventus left Chelsea on the brink of Champions League exit. It was a similar situation last season that saw Di Matteo promoted to the job after Andreas Villas Boas suffered a Champions League defeat that similarly saw Chelsea on the brink of exit. Chelsea have also gone a few games in the premier league without a win, but is third place with a squad in the process of being rebuilt really that big of a problem?

It seems like Abramovich doesn't want managers to rest on their previous successes. His tactic over the last few seasons seems to be "When a manager gets a few bad results, the trend is going to go down, rather than wait for the form to return, let's sack him and get a new guy in". Chelsea definitely receive a boost in form when a new manager comes in, but in the long term, if this club REALLY want to achieve success and legacy, surely this is not the means to do it? Look at Alex Ferguson as an example, he would have been sacked in his first season at Manchester United if Abramovich was the owner, and look what he has gone on to achieve for his club.

When he looks for his ninth manager since 2003, will he be thinking that something needs to change, and he needs to find a manager who can build a team that he wants, without ever dropping points, or will he be thinking "this tactic has worked so far"?

When the economy gets as bad as it is, people often think "My job isn't really secure, I better work hard to make myself invaluable to the company" but in the case of Di Matteo, maybe we should all count ourselves lucky that we aren't hired by Abramovich. Maybe this is proof that some of us need to work on freeing ourselves from employment altogether; if high flying successful people like Di Matteo are being fired, nobody is safe.

Good Article mate. By the way, has Roman changed is mind nowadays? Look to Mourinho example! I think part of this "partial and temporary" unsuccess by José Mourinho is not making even Roman A. thinking in fire him! Why? Because they set a long term project for the club. Moreover, the renewal of Mourinho's contract this year supports this idea. Another question that arises is, if it wasn't Mourinho leading Chelsea with this results, will Abramovich have the same posture?
