4 Skills Needed To Work In Social Media So You Stand Out From The Crowd

If you have hopes and dreams of being able to work in social media, it's important to understand what skills are highly sought after by businesses in the social media world. Without the relevant experience or skill base you are likely to fail but fortunately, the skills required can be easily picked up and honed.

When you have a good understanding of the skills you need to attract the attention of businesses that need these social media skills, you can concentrate on further developing the skills you already have or learning those that you are lacking. When you have mastered the following skills, you can make a very good life for yourself by doing work in social media as businesses are only too willing to part with their money to have their social media profiles managed.

Now of course, it goes without saying that having a passion for social media is a must but your passion alone for this type of work will not be enough for a business to see you as a worthy investment. If you are looking to work in social media and be successful, keep the following skills in mind and perhaps consider ways to develop your existing skills and gain training in the areas that you're lacking.

1. A Keen Eye For Analytic's

The best social media managers out there tend to have a good understanding of what a customer wants. They are able to see a product and align it with a particular audience. It is this flare for identifying opportunities in the marketplace that makes a good social media manager stand out from the crowd but only when they couple this flare with effective data analysis skills.

Merely spotting an opportunity means nothing without getting your initial hunch backed up by cold, hard, factual evidence and known trends. You need to learn how to evaluate your ideas to appreciate whether the customer demand warrants driving your idea forward.

Many analytic's tools are available that can assist someone who wants to work in social media such as a keyword research tool for instance. By researching a search term and identifying if it is regularly searched in the search engines by possible buying customers is a must. You must also establish whether it has high or low competition to determine whether you can monetize your idea using social media.

2. Writing Skills

You would expect that you would need professional writing skills to work in social media and some sort of background in marketing but in truth, you just need to be able to write with the customer or client in mind. The knack to creative writing is to put yourself in the customer shoes and offer value in your writing.

Having an inherent understanding of what your target audiences like and more importantly, NEED, enables you to orientate your posts, comments and tweets to offer them significant benefits. However, this should be done by writing naturally and allowing your content to flow whilst providing value to the reader.

A mistake many people make when they start to work in social media is they try forcing offers and promotions down the throats of their potential customers. This tends to have the opposite effect on the reader and puts them off your intended promotion. Phrases like "Click Here Now" and "Buy This Today" often puts your target audience off.

This old, and out dated promotional method should have been killed off with the dinosaurs! These over used types of phrase, also known as a "call to action," should NOT be included in your creative writing. Instead, you should practice linking naturally from within your content to offer a more reader friendly experience.

3. SEO Skills

Those managers who work in social media often claim to be experts in Search Engine Optimization but in my opinion, there is no such thing. The rules and realms of SEO are constantly shifting and I believe an expert in a field is someone who knows all there is to know about their specialist subject.

Search engines like Google are constantly changing their algorithms so it is difficult to keep up but mastering the basic fundamentals of SEO is key if you want to reach your required target market. The search engines are your life-line so you have to understand how they work so you can use them to your advantage. Their are some very cost effective and reputable training courses available that can assist you in this area but you need to know where to look if you don't want your fingers burned.

4. Excellent People Skills

You would be forgiven for thinking that all work in social media is done online but you would be very mistaken. Often times, what starts out as an online venture can very quickly develop into a face to face meeting. If you can imagine working with a company and managing their social media campaigns and promotions, if they launch a a new product, they may need your presence at the launch.

At the end of the day, you will be the one that they interact with before the launch. You will be the one sending the messages and posting comments all about the new product so you should make your presence felt at the launch. When customers see that you are a real person this further strengthens the business to customer relationship. Such networking efforts in the offline world only go on to further enhance your efforts in the online world.

If you know of any other skills you think are vitally important to those who work in social media, I would love to here your thoughts and ideas. Feel free to contribute any ideas you have to help those who want to develop their social media skills. Oh yeah, and don't forget to like and share this article if you benefited from reading it in any way.
