After scrolling through various forums, I was surprised to see the number of questions posted by teenagers asking how they can go about finding work when they leave school. I was left wondering whether our education system builds anything into the curriculum to educate kids on finding work when their school days come to an end? Jobs for 16 year old's are out there but do teenagers know exactly how to find and apply for these jobs.
As a recruitment consultant, I have been approached by many teenagers under the age of 18 who have asked me to help them find work but unfortunately, the company I work for will not employ anyone under the age 18. This is due to the fact that the clients we deal with can not employ under 18 year old's for health and safety reasons.
Finding Jobs For 16 Year Old's On The Internet
In my opinion, our education system needs to get with the program and move with the times. More time and energy should be spent on teaching our kids on how to find a job, secure a job and furthermore, build a long term career.
We live in a world that is now dominated by the Internet. If you asked a classroom full of kids anywhere in the world to raise their hands if they used Facebook, you would see a full show of hands. So the education system should be using this social medium and others to their advantage.
Companies Need Their Social Media Profiles Managed
With so may company's in the world now eager to increase their exposure and reach out to potential customers they are outsourcing lots of positions to anyone who knows how to Like, Follow, Tweet, Upload, Comment etc. If this area of employment was explored in schools, I have no doubt that many kids would find easy social media jobs when they left school.
Jobs for 16 year old's in social media are rapidly increasing but many school leavers are unaware these positions exist. Given the fact that so many kids use social media everyday and are probably more computer literate than the majority of adults, I think that educating them further in schools would have a huge impact on their success in the future.
Schools and teachers just need to realise that whilst all the other academic subjects within their existing curriculum are still important, their are shifts in employment trends that they should be aware of. Having a flexible curriculum that can accommodate training in social media and move with these trends would be a definite advantage to the workforce of tomorrow.
I think too that our education system should keep up with the times. However, it may be difficult to establish a curriculum that caters to the rapid change of technology.
I believe all subjects in the education curriculum are important but they need revamping so they are more relevant to modern times. What do you think?
I took electronics classes in high school which led to working at White Sands Missile Range by 18 and NASA Houston by 20. It is hard to believe that schools don't require the experience. It is as essential as Writing and Math today.
Thanks Sherry, I just think that given advances in technology, our education system should move with the times and educate in line with these advances.
Hey, Craig, Definitely an avenue that we should be helping teenagers build on. Will explore your link more tomorrow night. Looks interesting!
