Facebook Founder Faces Security Breach

Think your Facebook account is completely private and secure? Think again.

Earlier this week, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s own private Facebook account was infiltrated and his private images were posted on the internet for the world to see. This hack wasn’t illegal; it involved using a known flaw in the Facebook website. Any user can report images posted by anyone as inappropriate, and doing so allows that user to view all other images in the same profile, regardless of whether they are public or private. Someone chose to exploit the bug by flagging Zuckerberg’s own profile photo as inappropriate, which allowed him to view all photos posted by Zuckerberg himself, including private ones.

Thankfully, Zuckerberg did not violate his own company’s terms and conditions by posting anything obscene, but it did put him in the spotlight in an embarrassing way. For a moment, he probably felt violated and upset, just as the millions of Facebook users felt upset when Facebook changed privacy settings and the website interface without warning. Facebook is not known as a security company, however because they gather and save personal information and photos, they are responsible for maintaining the security of the website.

This security breach comes just days after Facebook reached a deal with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) after it faced charges that it had “unfair and deceptive” privacy policies, and that it may have violated federal law. Facebook has faced criticism for their unannounced website changes which made private personal data public without warning or approval. Facebook has agreed to act more responsibly and make changes to the system. In order for Facebook to continue to succeed and not lose members, it needs to maintain the trust and faith of the user community.

When it comes to using Facebook, we all need to remember that our personal safety and security ismost important. Usually, when users change Facebook status updates or upload photos or check in from a cell phone or laptop, they are often more concerned with their wireless security, passwords, and keeping their account from being hacked. Most users automatically trust that their private information on Facebook will stay private, visible to only their friends. The fact that Mark Zuckerberg’s private information has become public, and that the FTC had to step in to regulate their privacy practices, shows us that Facebook is not as secure as we might think. When it comes to keeping your information safe, the only person you can trust is yourself. Never allow a security company to make promises regarding your online information. The safest way to keep your information private is to not post it on the internet in the first place.

Hey, you are definitely right that people should not post private information on the web. Under no circumstances whatsoever, should people post stuff like that especially on social medias. It's enough trouble as it is keeping your information safe and secure just through online banking. I also totally agree with you about this new interface. I read up on the interface of the Facebook Timeline before getting it. I found that the new interface had a TON of bugs via the pictures and it obviously opens up all your information in an easily downloadable format. Personally, I don't like it and I wish they kept the old regular wall posting. Keep on writing those great articles buddy.

I am sure the security team had a bad day but Zberg has only himself to blame, if he don't like the policies he has the power to change them...I think it's hysterical that after shitting on all of our privacy rights over the years that he was violated himself...Maybe now he will see it from our point of view and make some healthy changes that will benefit us all. If we lose our right to privacy that opens up a whole can of worms that I really don't think most people understand the implications of, The fact is gov't seem to always want to collect information on us as if we are there subjects rather than them being our public servants and the quickest way to lose our rights is to stop defending them. If we let FB violate our rights it sets a precedent for others to follow suit, I for one would rather die than let anyone violate my rights...I never post anything private on FB myself but I believe it should be up to the user to dictate what material will be published to whom. That reminds me of what my father taught me, he always told said "if you didn't stand for something you will fall for anything." Sounded like BS when he said it but as time rolls on I understand what he meant. Great article by the way I look forward to reading more from you, I joined your tribe so I can get informed when you write new material.

I agree with you Ty, it is kind of ironic isn't it! I think people should remain very careful what they share within social networks because they can be hacked and some things can certainly jeopardize future opportunities...

I wonder if Mr. Zuckerberg really understood the implications of the own "sharing medium" that he created. If it gets hacked, you can get exposed. AND, if you are not willing to share content that the world could potentially see, it is probably not a good idea to share it on a social network. Great article! :)

Thanks, Kyle! Just as celebrities often think they are above the law, I think Zuckerberg thinks he is above the flaws in his own technology. It can't happen to him... he created it!

Yeah, it happens, he probably looks at it completely different and with a much different sense than his actual users. He probably thought his account was invincible and may have even had different levels of protection on it that weren't open to others. I can only imagine what the "security" team were subjected to on the meeting the next morning!
