Its that time of year again! Time to set goals for the new year. Time to make a fresh start and correct all your errors of the past year. Sounds simple, right? As you know, it isn't that easy.
If you think your social media strategy could use a kick in the right direction, here are some goals you should set for yourself to make 2012 the most productive year ever. Remember, it is important to come up with a plan- but it is more important to FOLLOW THROUGH!
Create A Monthly Calendar
Take some time to sit down with a calendar and map out exactly what you have planned for the year. Setting deadlines is critical to ensure you don't just put it off from month to month. Set specific goals. Let's say you want to add 1000 Twitter followers this year for example. That's a very overwhelming goal, so break it down. That would be around 84 a month - much more manageable. Even better, break it up by weeks. If you add a mere 20 followers a week, that is 1000 a year!
Track Your Results
Once you have your goals, it is important to track them. Write out what you want to accomplish, then make periodic checks of your progress. Better to know you have a problem after the first month, than to wait til the end of the year and miss your goal. You might even check out Klout. The jury is still out on this site, but it does provide a decent measuring stick of your online campaign.
Be Everywhere
Make sure you have at least setup an account on all the major places - Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You don't have to be active in all of them, just create a complete profile. That way, if you determine that one of them would be a good business source - you are already in the game.
Get Organized
Maintaining a good social media program can be daunting. Don't be afraid to let software help you out. Social media programs like Tweetdeck can help you spread your message on several channels at once. It is a free tool, so why not use it. Another great one I discovered this year was Buffer. It allows you to greatly increase your Twitter effectiveness by scheduling your content at the optimal times. A real life-saver!
Get Going
The first step is the hardest, so stop what you are doing and make a plan TODAY. If you work at it, your social media program will start to pay big dividends this year.
