Social Media Marketing Plan for Business

What does social media mean to you and do you have a social media marketing plan for your business laid out? If you are unsure as to what I am getting at here I am going to help you understand the different components of social media in today’s Internet world and I am going to help you create a plan that you will be able to implement today.

Social Media Marketing 101

First off, in order to understand how to leverage social media for your business, you need to understand what the benefits are. To put things into perspective for you, I am going to provide you with some statistics as to just how powerful social media is and how much reach you are truly missing out on if your business does not have a presence on the top social networks.

(1) ⅔ of all adults are using social media. Yes, 66% and the younger generation is much higher, some statistics stating as high as 95% of young people under the age of 25 are on social media.

(2) Social Commerce (buying via social networks) is expected to grow to $30 billion within just the next 5 years.

(3) By 2015, brands can expect that 50% of all their revenue will be linked directly or indirectly to social media and social platforms. Amazing stuff!

So if you have be “shying” away from creating a business page on Facebook, creating a profile for your business on Twitter...or using Google Plus to drive additional traffic to your business, then you are truly missing out.

Your time is now.

How do you construct your social media marketing plan for your business?

The thing about social is that you can’t do a haphazard job and expect results. If you are not going to commit to being “present” within a social network, then you are simply wasting your time and energy.

Because of this I recommend that you focus within one social medium when starting out and then diversify once you become comfortable. The most likely choice for starting out would be to do one of the following:

(1) Create a Facebook Business Page

(2) Create a Google Plus Business Page

(3) Create a business Twitter account

Facebook has over 900 million users now and it is probably the best starting point for attracting user engagement. Like the other networks it is free and many business are effectively using it to accumulate “likes” which essentially are a list of interested people that you can get in touch with timely messages, offers, and new and valuable business information.

Once you have your business page set-up, then you can effectively start promoting your business page. There are several ways that you can do this, but a few easy ways to gain traffic and reach to your social profiles are:

(1) Add links to them from your website

(2) Advertise them via sponsered ads

(3) Run contests and challenges

(4) Engage and Internet with your audience

The last item is critical. If you are not an active user of social media and you think that having a profile set-up will “just do the work itself”, then you are in for a dissappointment. Social media gives you back what you put into it. It takes effort and an ongoing dialogue with your audience if you plan on seeing results from your social marketing efforts. The more you involve yourself within the social community, the more rewards (in terms of business) you will reap from your efforts.

This is just a brief overview as to how to use a social media marketing plan for your business. I hope you enjoyed this and do let me know if you have any questions, feedback or stories about your experiences with social media.

Great article Kyle on How do advertise. I like the methods that you have highlighted. I think that Running contests and challenges is the best method but rarely used!

Great article Kyle, I have to admit I've never felt 100 per cent comfortable using social media for a number of reasons, but I completely understand it's potential and am trying to overcome the reservations. Thanks for the information.

Yeah, a lot of people don't feel comfortable "sharing" with the world, and that is OK. For business reasons, you should create an account even if the sole reason is for business and not to share your life story with the world.

It's taking me a while to get results but I'm starting to see some action. You're right about the interaction. You have to be engaged to see results.

Absolutely... and the more engagement that you evoke, the more often people will be coming back to your profile to see your activity.

This is a good article Kyle. Thanks. I shied away from Social Media for the longest while. I have a personal, and business account with Facebook, and am about to do a fan page. I find staying on top of the communication is quite a commitment and difficult when you have many things going. I know it's important and it's even fun sometimes. Put up Pinterest boards and love it. Suits my visual nature. Hard to ignore the great traffic benefits.

Yeah, you definitely have to pick and choose your social battles. I think that a lot of people that think they are doing "business" via social mediums like Facebook and Twitter just end up wasting their time. Productivity should be left to things that increase your business and if you are not seeing results, you either don't have the time or you may not be committed enough to it...and that is OK.

This could have been written just for me. So far, I have avoided social media, but so far I do not have a specific business to promote. Presumably, you cannot open a business page or account without a business?

This too is my question. Also, would promoting oneself as an article writer work?
