Social Media Relationships - Your 10 Ingredients Recipe

1 - First impressions. Start with one good first impression. And it’s okay to keep trying until you find your own style. After all, you’re not alone in learning about social media relationships. Social media is new enough that most people don’t know yet.

2 – Contact. Strangers can turn into friends with contact over time. When a first impression received using social media feels interesting, comfortable, entertaining or at the least, non-threatening to you and to your stranger, there’s an opening for more contact points.

3 – Oops, no bananas. Bumping into someone in the fruit aisle while you’re selecting bananas gives you a chance to have meaningful contact in person. That’s the part where the bananas give your beautiful smile, your nod, wave, bow or handshake a chance to spark small talk conversation. But what do those bananas really do? They act as a vehicle for you touch someone’s heart in some way. When you touch people that you don’t know in some way, you become a little bit less of a stranger. You don't have to be there in person to touch someone's heart.

4 – Words. Authors have been touching our hearts all our lives using words, way before social media existed. You’ve got words! Make every word count and you’ll quickly find out you have more power by using social media to develop relationships than you’d ever realized.

5 – Stories. People love stories. What’s some good stuff you want to share using social media? Your content is what lets your story and you into someone’s heart no matter what method you use to get it there. Share your story on these new platforms too!

6 – Simple. People move on fast… keep it simple by just trying things and seeing what works for you.

7 – Pictures. Most people are visual. That old saying is true that, “Pictures tell a thousand words!” Videos and video sound bites too. Think links!

8 – One. Even on social media you’re connecting one by one! So consider your audience, pick one somebody from that audience, imagine you’re sitting down at tea together and connect.

9 – Passion! It’s okay to let the real you shine out with all the excitement stored in your heart. Yep, that means you’ve got to pick something that matters to you and let your passion shine through somehow each time you put something "out there" on the Internet.

10 –You. If there’s one thing you know about it’s you. People find people interesting. Share your story using social media in a way that touches the heart of your one person you picked. Because touching the heart matters Because you've probably got something in common with your audience or you would not have chosen that audience. Because when you know how something connects with you, you automatically pay more attention. Share your story in a way that shows you’re connected and a social media relationship can begin with your one person. When you've done something once, you've learned a skill, right? Use your new skill again.

Be yourself. Create relationships touching one heart at a time. That’s the mixing part for your 10 ingredients.

Really good article. It seems to point out how making friends in the digital world is very much the same as in the real world. You make the social media thing seem a little less intimidation, when you presented it like that. Thank you. This article has been helpful. -Jerusha

Cynthia, perhaps we are two birds of a feather who love our language and the nuances of it! ;-) I love words and the way they roll off the tongue sometimes.
