Top 5 Changes In Facebook - What You Need to Know

You may have noticed some of the changes in Facebook taking place lately.  But did you know the biggest update is yet to come?  What do you need to know about these changes in Facebook?  Below is the top five biggest changes in Facebook in 2011.

1. Your news feed has changed. For those of you who are Facebook junkies, you know, the ones who check Facebook every hour, your news feed will include all the most recent updates from your friends.  Not really a change here but...

For those of you who only check Facebook once or twice a day, your Facebook news feed will only show you the major status updates or "Top Stories".  Since you don't check Facebook as often, Facebook will no longer clog your news feed with the less important updates.

2. The all new News Ticker. You have probably already noticed this little gizmo in the top right hand corner of your Facebook pages. But what does it do?  It unclogs your news feed of the less important updates like "Chris became friends with Lisa" and places it in the always updating ticker.

3. You can subscribe or unsubscribe to friends (without defriending them) Maybe you don't like seeing annoying updates from certain friends but you don't necessarily want to defriend them.  You can now unsubscribe to them meaning you will no longer see their updates on your news feed.  You are still friends and you can still view their profiles.  You just won't see any status updates from them.

On the other hand, if their is a certain someone whom you would like to see their status updates most often, you can subscribe to them. Their status updates will now receive priority over others and will be moved higher in your news feed.

4. You can mark posts as important or unimportant (i.e. make top story)  Facebook now places what it thinks should be your "top stories" at the top of your news feed so you see them first.  You can help Facebook determine what your top stories should be by marking your favorite stories as "top stories" and unmarking top stories you no longer want to see as often.  Every post now has a triangle button in the top left corner of the post allowing you to mark or unmark it as a top Facebook story.

5. The controversial Timeline The Timeline is one of the biggest changes in Facebook yet and it is expected to take affect in late 2011.  So what is it?  The Timeline is a digital scrapbook of your life since you joined Facebook.  The Timeline will replace your profile with all the momentous occasions from your time well spent on Facebook.  So what is so controversial about this?  You will only have a few days to edit your Timeline once it takes affect.  Once this initial grace period is over, you will not be able to edit your Timeline.  Your life will be on permanent display to your friends whether it be good or bad.

There you go, the five biggest changes in Facebook in 2011 and what you need to know about them.
