Will Google Plus Really Change My Life?

Will Google Plus Really Change My Life?

It started out as “invite only” but my friends and I were wondering why we wanted an invite to Google Plus (Google + or G+) in the first place. Is this just another Facebook? Is it another Linked In? Will this be the next great social networking application? Or will it be another beta-max, another floppy disc, another pager, to add to the pile of outdated technology?

It took time for me to get on the Facebook bandwagon. At first, I thought Twitter was kind of cool for communicating with a small circle of friends. I likened it to “blogging for one who has little to blog about” as 140 characters seemed rather do-able. Soon Facebook became the way to connect with a wide variety of friends – old and new. Twitter became about more than “what’s for breakfast” or “where’s a cheap happy hour?” I was really connecting!

So, now Google wants in the game. I admit that Google has taken over my world since the first time I heard the word used as a verb – over 10 years ago. I use Google searches everyday now. I like Gmail. I use and share Google calendars. And Google docs. And I even started using Google Voice recently.

So, I have to wonder, is Google’s foray into social networking going to take over my life? Will I give up Facebook? And Twitter? And LinkedIn? And the myriad of other applications that I have signed up for, but almost never use? (But they sounded like a great idea at the time!)

First off, I’m going to have to learn a new vocabulary. I’ve friended, fanned, liked, tweeted, and retweeted. Now I have to put my friends into “circles” and check out the “sparks” and “hangout” and “huddle”.

The current problem is that most of my friends aren’t doing the +1 thing yet. So I have to keep Facebooking and Tweeting and blogging to keep in touch. And will I give up the other applications when this thing gets big enough? I don’t know. Will I find that old crush from sixth grade only on Facebook? Will I get the quick reminder of events or deals that currently fill my Twitter-feed? Will it be easy to maintain or just too much information?

Only time will tell if Google has the power to outperform the current social networking sites. Some people still use MySpace, so I’m sure some will continue on with Facebook and the others after I’ve made the leap to Google Plus. I can say, though, that if anyone can do it, I think that Google can. It may take time and some tweaking, but Google has become a standard for so many other applications.

Street Talk

Update - I'm signed up for Google Plus and I am accepting people into my circle, but I just don't use it. Facebook and Twitter are so streamlined, and especially with the iPhone apps associated with them. That's where my circle of friends, and colleagues hang out. To reach a wider audience, I am blogging more - in several different places, with audiences that are specific to my topics.

I haven't jumped on the google plus bandwagon yet. I will probably do it eventually. I still don't actively use facebook. It seems like I have just collected a couple hundred "friends" which most I don't even talk to that much.
