Facebook Is Not A Fad

Do you remember the doll known as Rainbow Brite? Perhaps you own a pair of Rollerblades, and you use them to stay in shape. Maybe you watch "American Idol" every week, eager to see which songs the singers will be performing and who will ultimately be named the winner of the competition. Rainbow Brite, Rollerblades, and "American Idol" are all examples of fads. Some people believe that Facebook is also a fad. Is it really possible that a social network can become unpopular when so many people use it every day?

One thing that people do on Facebook is find friends. They can scroll through a list of names provided by the site, find family members and people that they know from work, school, church, or various activities that they belong to, and add them as friends. Keeping in touch through this social network will help them to grow closer.

Second, people post articles on the site. Writers write articles for various websites and then post them to the social networks, including Facebook. These articles are written on a variety of subjects, such as college life, health, fitness, and relationships. People who log on to the sites will then get to read the articles, and the writer will earn money. Articles are not all that people see there, of course.

Many businesses are also on Facebook. Prospective customers can log on to a business's site through the social network and find the information that they need. A radio station may be having a contest, for example. A listener who wants to participate in the contest can access the radio station through Facebook and enter the contest. If he is very lucky, he might even win.

Many popular games, such as FarmVille, CityVille, and Hidden Chronicles, exist on this website. Those who have an account with the site can log on and play these games with their friends.

Finally, people can keep in touch with one another through this social networking site. People like to know what others are doing. If a friend is planning a party, for example, another friend may contact him through Facebook to see if he needs any help. The two friends can then get together, work on the party, and make it a wonderful and memorable experience.

Unlike things of the past, Facebook is not a fad. It is too important to too many people, and they will continue to use it and enjoy it.

Street Talk

Hollie, I agree--Facebook adds a degree of access to others that has never been before. One day my high school friends were just vague memories, scattered to the four winds and their adult lives a total mystery--the next day, I could talk to every one of them--that blew my mind. It helps me keep in touch with my out-of-state siblings and cousins--I can see my nieces and nephews and their babies from posted pics and videos--that to me is the best part of Facebook. And I get a kick out of the few friends I've run into who live in foreign lands--I have friends in France, Jakarta, even Pakistan (we argue a lot). I consider my Facebook account as an enhancement of my email program--O, and another great thing is the birthday reminders (I've never been good with birthdays). Yep, I don't see it becoming obsolete any time soon--but I think younger folk, with their i-phones, may phase themselves into something that makes more sense to those who grew up post-digital-explosion. Skype, for instance, or some other app with more live, on-screen interaction. It own't matter to me--if FB goes, I'm not sure I have the enthusiasm to adapt to yet another app. Good article...

I agree it can be a very helpful tool, and it can also be a persons worst nightmare. One must be very careful how they use it, especially the young ones. Good article Hollie
