Microsoft Socl - Another Social Network We Can Forget About

Just when you thought we were done with new social networks, Microsoft Socl is on the verge of rolling out as the newest pup of the Social Network realm. Do you think that MS Socl is going to carry any weight within the industry, or do you think that Microsoft is going to chalk this up as another flopped attempt at becoming an industry emulator?

Time will tell, but I would like to jump into the ring and make some early predictions.

Why Social Networks are Losing Lust

It's simple...because there are so many of them. Don't get me wrong. Social is part of our lives now. It is part of business life as well, if you don't have your social spaces online, you are missing out on some serious brand equity and traffic to your business (if done correctly). It is integrated into our daily lives in the same way that breathing is.

But we have reached a point where people are just going to start sticking with what they know. If you are an avid Facebook user, then this is likely where you will "invest' your time hanging out, communicating, socializing, and sharing. A social profile is an INVESTMENT. When you upload pictures and create new relationships because of your social activities, you are becoming more and more embedded within that social ecosystem.

Nobody wants to start from scratch again, do they?

Creating Awkward New Relationships

If you have ever moved more than once in your life (in particular during your school years), you will know it isn't the easiest task to make new friends. It can be awkward and typically you end up creating "fake" relationships.

Social networking seems to be no different. All the popular kids (with lots of followers) get the attention. These are the early adopters, or the kids who have been at that school the longest. The first week of kindergarten is the easiest time to make long term friends, because at that point everybody is in the same relationship mode as you, nobody has friends.

With Microsoft Socl, we may be looking at the same thing. Good luck getting anybody that uses Facebook avidly to move over. They simply won't. Why would they join a social network that has no social networking knowledge over one that has over 7 years?

Let's take a look at some recent Social Networks...

Google Plus, Where ARE YOU?

Google plus may be worse off than you think. I personally took awhile to adopt Google + because I found it frustrating like many that I now had to join another social network. I had to recreate my profile. I had to hunt down some new friends. I had to update all my websites with my G+. A pain in the ass really!

Coined the social network for "geeks" (and probably a requirement for Google employees to use). It is also a social network for business people and entrepreneurs, but the reach within Google Plus really misses on a big audience. People that don't own a business and people that are not geeks (or Google employees). I actually do not know a single person that uses Google Plus or even knows what it is that is not in the Internet business, is a geek or does not own a business.

That says it all.

Google Plus had a massive platform of users to roll out a social platform like Google Plus (100+ million) and it still has not gained traction. Latest reports are indicating that it has been and is continue to follow a lackluster path of growth.

My Prediction for Microsoft Socl

I have been wrong before, but only once when I predicted the outcome of a Super Bowl [sarcasm goes here].

Microsoft Socl is NOT going to work. Unless you work at Microsoft and are very biased, you are probably going to agree with me here. Yes, I may set-up an account. Yes, I may even tie it into some of my web spaces where I offer the ability for people to share my content.

But what I will not be doing is engaging in the network. I simply don't have the time and I am not willing to hire people to pretend to be me on 10 different social networks. Facebook, Twitter ...you are in the social lead and I think you will continue to be if you innovate. Just don't slip up and become complacent!

The Solution: Do What Works

There is nothing saying that you have to be active within many social networks. There is nothing making you join Microsoft Socl. There is nothing saying that you need to Tweet 50 times per day or adopt business pages within every social networking site that comes around. There is nothing saying that you need to be active in more than one social network.

My suggestion to you is to do what works. Do what works for your personal life. Do what works for business. Do not feel you are missing out if you are not managing an account within every single social network. A haphazard attempt at social media can be worse than not doing it at all...remember this is your personal/business brand your are messing with.

Love to hear your feedback and thoughts! :)

Interesting that Microsoft should come so late to the game. As far as sitting in front of the computer all day because it is now your way of socializing... I once read a science fiction story about that..

I know definitely that Microsoft will want to bring something unique because they will want to retain the top in their brand, but converting more traffic to this social network is where they will sit down to gleeful out

Great article Kyle, I had no idea that MS was even attempting to go social, but it looks like an early failure to me. I don't know. I think there are WAY too many of these so-called social networks as it is and I don't even hardly use any of them anymore. I can see in 10 years (or less) people sitting in front of computers all day logged into social networks typing "I'm too busy being online to hang out". Real social.

Yeah, no kidding! Our new idea of socializing will be to go online, I personally know (and I am a culprit) that I prefer to text someone over call them. A lot of the time I don't need to see someone face to face either when I can just ping them online! A crazy shift in the way humans interact is taking place now, it will become a natural habit of ours in just a few years, and our old social will no longer be relevant. Phone someone? Why? I think MS Socl is doomed as well...

I would have to AGREE as well as DISAGREE with you on this one Kyle. It really all depends on the stand they take here. I mean heck say 5 or so years ago EVERYONE was using myspace including myself and said that facebook was a waste. NOW, I only use Facebook and have completely forgotten my myspace login lol. So if they can take the time to really roll this thing out right it could be the next facebook, just as myyearbook was the next myspace, and facebook was the next myyearbook. See the pattern there? However if they rush and try to make it too complicated to begin with, FAIL. I will personally be part of it one way or another just in case it takes a high stance in the future, I want to have the jump. Im sure Ill see you there as well for precautions. Good day kyle and loved the article.

Their business cannot sustain without a MASSIVE advertising budget. When they stopped recently, their traffic stopped. The problem is, people can only buy so many discounts (most times that they don't need) and businesses can only throw out so many loss leader offers before it starts to fizzle.

I think it (or any others) is not going to work simply because the social networks have consolidated themselves...personally, I am good with facebook and twitter. Google +? Well, you said it all really!

I think it is very easy for them to create initial interest, but it becomes much more difficult to get people to use the system. Even if they "think" they are feature heavy, they need to answer this question: "why would someone want to use your network if they are already deeply embedded within another" If they can't answer that, they I believe they are setting themselves up for failure.
