A Beginners Guide to Ip Address Hiding Software

As far as I know, there are basically two types of IP address hiding software out there. One is called a "proxy" and one is called a "VPN". I have used both, in various contexts, but there are many more uses for each. I'll do my best to explain their differences and which one is going to best suit your needs.

The more common of the two is a proxy. You may have heard the terms "rolling proxy", or "anonymous proxy", or "proxy server". These are actually all different things, but because most people who use them aren't 100% clear about what they are and how they work, the terms tend to get mixed up and often are used interchangeably.

A proxy works as IP address hiding software (though web based proxies are not actually software, and don't have to be installed) by redirecting your traffic to a "proxy server". Basically, it's a huge computer server with many different IP addresses. You send your traffic to proxy server, and your traffic then exchanges IP addresses with you. Your IP is mixed with other IPs (so your new IP can't be traced to your old IP), and then the new IP address provided to you is used to access the site you originally requested. This way, anyone trying to see what you're doing online will only see your new IP address. Should they try to track it to your computer or phone, they won't be able to because they'll hit the proxy server first, not your computer.

Among proxies there are also different types of IP address hiding software, mainly dynamic and fixed IP's. Most of the time, the default will be a dynamic IP address, which means that your IP will be changed frequently (time periods will vary). That means if you access a site today at 2:00 PM with a proxy, the site you access at 3:00 PM could be from a different IP address. This is sometimes done automatically, but it's also common to change your IP each time you sign in/out of the proxy server. There are also static IP addresses. These are usually used when you need to make some sort of transaction, be it money, files, or information, where having a dynamic IP could cause your credibility to come into question. The truth is, that because proxies provide anonymity, they're sometimes used for illegal activity, so a frequently changing IP could set off some red flags.

Another type of IP address hiding software is called a VPN or virtual private network. A VPN works a lot like a proxy, redirecting your traffic, assigning you a new IP, and making you anonymous while you surf on the Internet. A VPN however adds several layers of encryption. You may have heard the term "encryption", "tunneling", or "certificates". A VPN must be installed on your computer or phone. This way, before your traffic is sent to the VPN server, it can be encrypted and tunneled to the server, thereby increasing the security of the communication between you and the VPN server.

There are also different types of VPN protocols. Depending on your security needs and device used to access the Internet, each VPN protocol has its functions. The basic VPN is called PPTP. Though it's security features are not as advanced as others, it's often the default VPN for users to purchase because installation is easy and connection speeds are fast. This can be used on mobile devices. Another mobile VPN protocol which offers more secure connections is called L2TP. This is the recommended VPN by most VPN services for users which require higher security on their phones or tablet computers.

Though there are many more VPN protocols like SSTP and IKEv2, the last type of VPN protocol I'd like to discuss is SSL/OpenVPN. This VPN provides by far the highest security of all VPN protocols. As far as IP address hiding software goes, to get guaranteed security, SSL/OpenVPN is the way to go. This is because this VPN requires "certificate" verification. Codes and certificates are assigned to your computer for communication with the VPN server, which means that even if someone were to steal your password and login credentials, without the secure certificate code that only your computer has, they'll be unable to steal your online identity.
