Apps Aide Communication for Children With Autism

These days almost everyone knows of a family with one or more children with Autism. Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. More and more children are diagnosed everyday, about 1 in 88 and the need for awareness and help for parents struggling is ever more increasing.

For parents of non verbal children, life can be difficult and small tasks such as getting dressed or making food choices can be either one or some of the biggest challenges of the day. Many children affected by Autism can't speak or have very low verbal skills. Parents are recently turning to the help of apps for the phone and tablet to aide their autistic children with communication. CBS 60 minutes reports "Autistic people whose condition prevents them from speaking are making breakthroughs with the help of tablet computers and special applications that allow them to communicate, some for the first time."

With easy to tap and swipe screens that phones and tablets provide, children who cannot quite form the words with their speech are now able to communicate basic wants and needs with the help of Android and iPhone apps of all kinds. Some researchers are amazed at what apps are now able to bring out in these children. There is so much they want to say and apps are now allowing them to breakthrough this non verbal barrier. From learning game apps to tap and speak apps, they vary both in content and price.

Here are a few top apps that parents have found helpful:

1. Autism myVoice Communicator (Android, $2.99) Available on Google Play Store and Amazon. Autism myVoice Communicator is an app designed to aide non-verbal children (even toddlers) and adults with communication. Unlike many other communication apps of this type, Autism myVoice Communicator can be used IMMEDIATELY after install for communication of basic needs, wants and/or emotions. This AAC app has been preloaded with pictures to touch, (Autism myVoice will immediately speak or say what has been tapped or touched) from meals and drinks (pancakes, lasagna, bananas, milk, apple juice) to different places (home, park) and toys or emotions (for ex. "I am happy!").

2. Injini: Child Development Game Suite (Apple, $29.99) Developed by experts and endorsed by parents and teachers, Injini’s collection of learning games offers meaningful play to young children, especially toddlers and preschoolers with cognitive, language, and fine motor delays.

3. Talking Larry the Bird (Apple, $0.99) Talking Larry the Bird is your whistling and talking bird friend. Play the piano keyboard and make Larry whistle a perfect tune. Say anything and Larry will repeat.
