How to secure your laptop and data?

Don’t use a computer bag

You are advised not to carry your laptop in a computer bag however good looking and comfortable it might be. A computer bag helps thieves as this makes obvious that you are carrying a laptop. Instead you can use briefcase or suitcase that is padded to keep laptop safe.

Never leave your laptop unattended

You are making the task of thieves easy by leaving your laptop unattended. In case of air travel you shouldn’t leave your laptop along with luggage. You should also not leave it in your car if it is unlocked. Moreover, you are advised to keep the laptop in your car in such a way that it cannot be seen from outside.

Keep passwords secret

Another mistake that people usually commit is to leave the access password of the laptop in the laptop bag. This is a big security lapse. Without access passwords and other security details it won’t be easy for the thief to access the data within the laptop to destroy or misuse the data. Make it a thumb-rule to never keep any written information in the carrying case.

These tips will surely safeguard your laptop from physical loss i,e, theft or accidental loss, now lets talk about what you can do to protect the data stored on it.

Use a BIOS password

Passwords are helpful in keeping your laptop data safe. Your laptop allows you to set a booting password that needs to be entered before booting the system. In case it goes into wrong hands, it will require him to enter the right booting password. After entering the wrong password for three consecutive times, the operating system will deny entry to the data store on the laptop.

Set a login password

After a booting password, you also need to set a login password. It makes it difficult for the user to login the system without using the login password. Here also three consecutive failures in providing the right password will block the entry of the user.

Encrypt the data

File encryption is the most popular tool to safeguard data from being misused. When you encrypt data, you are offered a key that becomes essential to access the data. Whenever, you try to access the data you need to enter the key or else it won’t be possible. Data encryption is very helpful in keeping your data safe as none other than the intended recipient would be able to read or access the data.

By using the tips mentioned above you can surely avert most of the threats for your laptop and the stored data.
