Vpn Services In China 2011

Vpn services in China seem to have recovered at least partly from hyped up security measures last week by the Chinese government. As a result of the rumoured "Jasmine Revolution" emulating the recent political shifts in Egypt, the Chinese government followed with increased security measures on the internet. Vpn services in China like Strongvpn, 12vpn, and Witopia were all blocked by The Golden Shield aka The Great Firewall. Also, to the dismay of many iPhone 4G users in China, the PPTP and L2TP protocols provided by these vpn services in China were also blocked, rendering all mobile vpn's useless.

Because larger vpn services in China like Strongvpn, Witopia, and 12vpn are so widely used by both foreigners and Chinese, the block was felt immediately and representatives of the companies immediately sent out tweets and emails apologizing for the block and ensured customers that they were working getting their servers back up as soon as possible. This also resulted in a kind of mass hysteria among potential vpn buyers, questioning the future of vpn services in China. Buyers who had purchased PPTP and L2TP protocols also began demanding refunds. Whether or not these products were refunded is unknown to me.

Now, a week later, the dust seems to have settled and it is now clearer which vpn services in China are in for the long haul. 12vpn and Witopia vpn have yet to come back online. After wavering attempts to maintain service in China, 12vpn's site is still inaccessible from the Fujian Province but it is possible that certain cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou might still have access. Strongvpn, after being blocked for a few days has got their site back online and is trouble-free for the time being. Freedur was reported as being blocked months earlier but was unaffected by this recent block.

As for a few new vpn services in China that have benefited from the vpn blocking fiasco, two companies - Astrill and Purevpn seem to have enjoyed an increase in popularity among the expat community in China. Purevpn offers SSTP protocols specific for Windows 7 and Windows Vista. SSTP is one of the protocols that China has not been able to block. Astrill vpn has a very slick site, live chat, unlimited switching of server location and a variety of server locations to match. For such an all encompassing package, their prices are much lower that of Strongvpn, and their site is easy to navigate for newbies looking to snag a vpn in China

Vpn services in China for the time being are still walking on eggshells because no one knows what the Puppet Master of the Great Firewall's next move will be. As of the writing of this article, select vpn services in China are still available.
