If you’re setting up a business from home and have been used to working on work premises, then there are a lot of adjustments to make as you learn how to work from home. You may already have the experience of working at home occasionally, but working at home on a permanent basis is something quite different. If you’re going to do this effectively and successfully, there are a number of different issues that you should consider.

7 Tips: How to work from home effectively

1. Dress as if you’re going to work. This really is one of the most important factors in learning how to work

from home. Dressing as if you’re going to work helps to set your mindset in work mode. It doesn’t matter what you wear, but hanging around half the morning in your pyjamas is likely to be counterproductive. Whatever you wear , think of them as your work clothes.

2. Have a discrete home office/working space – This doesn’t have to be a huge space, but you do need to mark it as the place where you spend your working hours. Again, this is important because it helps you create boundaries between work and other activities.

3. Minimise distractions: If you want to learn how to work from home effectively, it will be very important to minimise distractions. These can obviously come in different guises: family members, friends suddenly calling in, morning television, household jobs ...etc Only you can manage and minimise your distractions.

4. Decide on your working hours: Many people who set up their own business do it because they want a better work/life balance, and then they find at the beginning that the reality is very different. However, if you’re going to learn how to work from home effectively, it’s important that you establish how many hours you’re going to devote to the business.

5. Have a schedule: This is not just a case of creating a to do list. You will have one of those as well, but having a schedule or a timetable will help you to stay focussed. It will also help to make sure that you apportion your time as necessary. One of the joys of working at home is that you don’t get distracted by colleagues, but the downside can be there is nothing to stop you becoming so engrossed that you forget there are other things that need your attention. You need to make sure that you manage your time effectively.

6. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: working from home doesn’t necessarily mean that you will maintain a healthy lifestyle. Make sure that you remember to eat regularly, keep hydrated and take regular breaks. Go for a walk, give your mind a rest. You will work far more effectively if you do.

7. Maintain contact with other people. Of course it depends on what your business is, but if you’re a sole trader it can be quite isolating, so make sure that you have contact with other people – such as attending network events.

Learning how to work from home effectively has it’s challenges, but the best way is to establish good work patterns from the beginning, because bad habits can be very difficult to break.
