Assistive Technology And Adrian Flores

Assistive Technology is an educational term used to define any type of technology, device that helps an individual with a disability. In high schools across the United States, a growing number of students are in need of assistive technology (AT).

The following is a fictional scenario of a student who becomes disabled in high school. This scenario illustrates how important AT and a positive attitude is in helping disabled students' succeed in school.

Meet Adrian Flores

Adrian is the oldest son of Maria and Jesus Flores. His parents emigrated from Mexico before his was born. Adrian was born in the United States after his parents had received their United States citizenship. Adrian was born healthy, with no complications.

He went to both elementary and middle school without any difficulty. When he was 10, his little sister, Olivia was born. Then, the summer before his freshman year in high school, he was in a car accident In the car accident, an older friend was driving, and a drunk driver hit the passenger side of the car, where he was sitting. He suffered a small amount of brain damage and his eyes were hurt badly by the broken passenger's side window.

After the accident, he had trouble seeing. His eye doctor diagnosed him as legally blind. Adrian wanted to attend Bay View High School as he had planned before his accident. To do this, Adrian’s school needed to make the necessary adjustments needed to help Adrian be successful.

Due to Adrian’s new disabilities, Adrian’s teachers and special education staff, met together for a student’s individual education plan (I.E.P.). In his I.E.P. teachers’ determined what A.T Adrian may need. His teacher's asked Adrian to get classes with corrective lens,

Adrian visited the eye doctor. His eye doctor gave him an eye exam and helped him to get the right set of glasses with corrective lens to help improve his vision. The teachers at his I.E.P. determined that the classrooms his visited during the day for him to move around in. His teachers agreed that they would avoid moving desks and chairs.

He also was given a magnifying glass to use. His teachers provided his assignments and reading materials in large print. In the case of material he used on the computer, he was given the use of a screen reader.

Adrian's teacher's taught him how to use on all the new AT. Using the AT helped Adrian feel more confident in school. Adrian also maintained a positive attitude throughout his training. Although at times, his injury was depressing, he found that each time he focused on the negative in his life, he felt worse.

Each day as he thought of all he could do and not of all he couldn't do, he found possibilities In fact, he felt that all things were possible. He trained himself to not use the words: impossible, can't, and never. He also made it a point to see his new disability as a learning experience.

I like the way you presented this. I had plenty of experience with the IP for my son. Interesting article.
