Angel also known as ‘Malak’ in Arabic, is a creature, created by the Allah to serve several purposes, the priority task being offering prayers. The angel, unlike humans, obeys what Allah orders and does not, rather cannot carry out any action with free-will.
In Islam, basically there are four major angels that carry out major tasks as ordered by the Almighty, they are:
Gabriel or Jibrael (Peace be upon him): Chief of all the angels and the closest one to Allah, given the task to carry His message to all Prophets (Peace be upon them), later to be delivered to the masses. Also, he was the one through which Allah sent the first verse of Quran, starting from the word ‘Iqra’, towards his beloved Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him).
Israfeel (Peace be upon him): This angel has been specifically given the orders to blow the trumpet twice, initially for the ‘Judgement Day’ to occur and finally for the ‘Day of Resurrection’.
Mikael (Peace be upon him): Mikael is responsible for rain, wind, seasons, besides managing prayers (supplications) of the beings.
Izareel (Peace be upon him): This angel is basically responsible for death, with orders of the Almighty, also known as ‘Malak ul maut’, Izraeel (As) extracts souls of the human.
Besides these main malaks, there are millions of angels, responsible for small tasks, such as at Bait ul Mamoor, which is located on the 7th heaven, straight above the Kaaba in Makkah, where 70,000 angels perform Salah each day and don’t return, everyday a new set of angels comes and performs prayers. Also, this will keep on happening until the day of resurrection and there hasn’t been one single day when it has been missed. This was narrated by the Prophet’s companions on account of his Mairaaj journey to the heavens.
Besides, the above mentioned heavenly creatures, there are Munkir and Nakir, who descend upon the deceased in the grave, and ask them three questions, after which they are treated according to the answers. Kiraman Katibeen are the ones that note down every action of humans; good or bad, these are actually two malaks that have been placed on the left and right shoulder of every human.
There are several Malaks that have been created just to safeguard humans during different times including sleep, travel and so forth. Similarly, there are some angels that have been in one posture for a long time while praying that includes bowing, standing straight, prostration.
In addition to that, at a time there are millions and millions of angels in Makkah and Madinah, in Masjid al Haram and Masjid e Nabawi, that descend with Allah’s blessings and mercy for the pilgrims who travel to these exalted places to seek His mercy and forgiveness.
