People speak of believing sometimes as if our believing is what moves God to take action on our behalf. This is sad for those who have not yet bleieved; or not so sad, since the ultimate decision lay in God's hands anyway.

Having gone through years of severe depression, I have found it has always been God that has made the first move. It is indeed His Perfected Love that shines forth in men's hearts to cause them to believe in the first place.

So many times I would find myself fearful of not receiving from God because my believing wasn't just right, even when I was first saved. One of the first things God pointed out to me was the story of a man n the Bible that said to Jesus, "I do believe, help my unbelief", through this He gave me the courage to ask for myself. He showed me that He was meeting me on my level. After all, He is not only the Author and Finisher of my Faith, He is my Faith Itself. For there is Only One True Faith.

God showed me the questioning, the doubting, the fearing...those feelings were in a sense, not the problem. Those feelings would not hold back the blessings of God in my life because the key is to go to God concerning these things. Fellowship, honesty and openness is what He is longing for. And as I fellowship with Him; I find wholeness, completeness, my needs are met and those doubts and fears disappear.

So, I have found (actually He has shown me through His goodness, Truth and Grace) that is by His showing me His Perfected Love that I do believe and "see" what He has for me. I also know that if I have a hard time seeing that all I have to do is ask Him. The key is to keep on asking and relying on God. It's like a little child with a parent. He says to come to Him as little children. Little children have no shame in asking; in a loving parent-child relationship, they know that parents supply ...how much more so with our Lord God, Who not only supplies our physical needs, but all our spiritual and emotional needs as well. After all, He has promised "I shall supply 'all' your needs according My riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

Just knowing that God really does do it all, that we indeed can rest in Christ's Finished Work is soothing. Knowing that when I ask for something from God according to His Goodness, that He does indeed hear; and whatever He hears, I will have, this is promising.

So, if you pray and are having feelings of doubt, fear, or worry, just go to God in honesty about them. He has promised that anything asked according to His will, He hears; and that anything He hears, we shall have. But it's always nice to get those awful feelings out of the way. He is a Loving and caring God, what matters to you, matters to Him. There is nothing too small and nothing too big, because you in Christ are what His gaze is upon. You are the apple of His eye. Know always, that you are precious and beloved.

Arlene, this is a beautiful article. Thank you for the much needed reminder that God is in control and that all I really need is a simple, childlike faith. This just made my day!

I have a very strong faith as you have described above, however, when I try to express what you have expressed to others I sometimes get responses such as....G-d only helps those that help themselves....or.....I pray but my prayers are never answered. I just wanted to add to your thought in response to these questions. Yes, G-d helps those that help themselves, meaning, that G-d helps you if you work towards the idea of faith. Faith is hard work and requires long hours of intense thought in order to be of true faith. A busy life chasing riches and power will inevitable leave you with very little time left to think about how to truly acquire faith. As far as praying and G-d not answering, it may appear that G-d is not answering, but time is a funny thing that humans need in order to fully learn and understand the lessons of life. Time is not necessary and does not exist to G-d. You may ask how I would know something like that. My answer would be because time is a hassle and if we didn't have to battle it, life would be a lot more relaxing. Accordingly, based on the fact that my faith tells me G-d is perfect and without need of improvement - time is not necessary in His world. Therefore, our prayers will be answered at the time that we need them to be in our world, but in G-d's world they are considered answered immediately.

Thank you for you comments to bring more clarification. The idea that God only helps those who help themselves is not scriptural. Look at the man at the pool that could not get in, look at Paul, look at doubting Thomas....plus many more who had come to the end of themselves or were not "helping" themselves. We are compared to clay in the Bible while God is compared to the Potter. I used to be so afraid of keeping myself "centered" in the Lord. The reason I am pointing this out is because the Lord used my years of being a potter in college to show me His Love. I assure you that the clay never - never - takes "any" self effort. It cannot center itself, pull itself up, throw itself, ALL the clay does is REST in what the Potter is doing. There is such a love that a true potter has for the art that he or she makes ... and there truly is such a delicate feel and love for each piece. But the clay always simply rests in what the Potter does. Faith is not so much hard work but a gift from God. He says in His Word that we are saved by "grace through faith" THE gift of God. Realizing that faith is a gift that comes from hearing the Gospel of Grace (the Finished Work of Christ) takes all the work out on our end. Faith was never meant to be a work on man's part and true faith will never be. Faith truly (automatically) comes by hearing, hearing (automatically) by the Word of Christ. In answered prayer I have found Christ is key. God sent His only Begotten Son --Jesus Christ -- not only to conquer our enemies and end every curse in our lives, but to earn every thing FOR us. Our prayers are answered in Christ our Lord. And He cried, IT IS FINISHED!!!! So many do not know their covenant and what Christ has done for them and that God truly is Love. I thank HIm that we indeed do have answered prayer in the now! And that it's "yes and amen" to everything Christ has paid for us to have! Anything that we ask according to His will, He has promised that He hears, and He promises that if He hears indeed we shall have it.
