Discipline Me?

As parents, we are instructed to discipline our children, to protect them and teach them the ways in which they should live. In the same way when we become children of God, He too disciplines us to live Godly lives, displaying honor and respect in all we do. We would think that as we reach adulthood as with our children, God would no longer feel the need to correct us.

His sole purpose is to help us become more Christ like and learn to trust and honor Him. In doing so, He sometimes has to chasten us when we start down a wrong road or get off track. He loves us too much to leave us to fend for ourselves and if we will follow His commands, we can live our lives fulfilling the plans he has for us.

In my day, many moons ago, discipline was a common practice and my siblings and I got plenty of it! At the time I hated it and could not understand why we had to be disciplined, but looking back, I now realize it was for my own good. I also believe I am a better person today because my parents did discipline me. And guess what? It didn’t kill me either. I’m still here.

Just as with our own children, God also wants to protect and teach us the right way to live. Although as parents we stop disciplining at the age of accountability, God’s disciplines’ continue throughout our lives. In order that we may know His instructions and be pleasing to Him, He is faithful to watch over us and yes, correct us on occasion.

Life is tough and the punches thrown can be rough. If we are not careful we will make choices and react in ways that are not in our best interest. God is here to set us straight, and sometimes even allow us discomfort to get is back on the right track. At the time of being disciplined, it is at the least discomforting. If we can begin to understand, that God is all knowing, that He has a plan for us and that we cannot know his ways, we will soon realize His discipline is for our own good.

When we live in God’s family, as His children, we can expect to be corrected at times. It does not mean He is mad at us or that He is trying to be mean to us; it only shows that He loves us and wants for us what He knows is best. No one likes discipline, but if we will learn from our failures and His disciplines’ he will fulfill every dream He has planned for us.
